Greetings Mr Kamoke: I hope the holiday season is treating you well. :)

Lots of wind this afternoon. And a little rain. More rain tonight.

I was about to go to sleep when I found the rain had gotten a lot harder.

The water was already well over the curb on the corner.

hammerquill
12-07-2004, 02:32 AM
I moved my car out of the garage. I had to go the long way 'round to get it up the hill to safety. The water was too deep already.

As soon as I got back from moving it, the rain seemed to slack off.

But the creek's less than two feet from overflowing.

hammerquill
12-07-2004, 02:35 AM
Two feet may sound like a lot, but I've seen it rise and fall four feet in the space of ten minutes; it's a narrow, steep-sided channel here.

The minute it's over its banks, more or less, it finds its way into three of the building's garages. The other two are safe for a little bit longer.

We had water above a foot deep in my garage once last winter, and nearly that on another occasion. I'm told that twelve years back it was three feet deep in the garages.

hammerquill
12-07-2004, 02:42 AM
When it happens during the day, it's not quite so bad, but this middle-of-the-night stuff is annoying.

I have to figure out what I'm going to do with the car when I go away for Christmas.

Ah... In the ten minutes it's taken me to write these, the street has gone back to being a street with fast-flowing gutters, and not a wave table with whirlpool and jacuzzi jets, and the creek has gone down enough that it's no longer visible from my window (that is, it's dropped by about two feet).

I'm going to bed, now.

Larrissa

I don't know what a broviac is or where they might have put it..but if it is away from the head/neck area here is an idea.
(I also don't know how he acts...so take this for what it is worth)

If you drape him well, in a sheet and keep it tight at the neck, then after the cut you can get him to lie on the drainboard (on his back) and use the kitchen sink sprayer --of you have one..to wash off his head and neck....have extra towels handy...he may need one under his neck..and it will get soaked...and so will you..but it works!

I have cut lots of hair in my day. I always cut my own..I don't want anyone else F***ing it up...I can do that myself!
340434

me too.. i dont' let ANYONE touch my hair... other than having it permed in april....

the broviac is a central line the doctors surgically put into harrison's chest and it runs up to his jugular and into his heart- used for taking blood and for hooking him up to an IV, instead of having to poke him every time.... you can't get it wet because it has screw on caps (and a clear dressing over the site) and of course, water can get through the threads of the screw and contaminate his line... <sigh> poor baby has had a total of three tub baths since coming home... and i am afraid after the last one, it was his last- until this baby is here or he gets the line out....

don't get me wrong, i wash my kid... he's not a grubby dirty stinky boy... (usually.. :P) but we just crank up the heat, put down a quilt int he living room with towels over it and have a really good sponge bath and hair wash there.... not the most convenient thing but easier on mommy than the whole tub thing lately!!!

Hey Sunshine, we call those "jail windows" --we have them in our office too. UGH

I hates me some jail windows. they have miniblinds on them and let just enough sun in (if it is sunny) to cause unbelievable computer glare.

I just got back from visiting my uncle in the hospital. I don't think he has much longer. He doesn't speak but he looked at me and smiled at me and held my hand tight.

This morning I spent $23 and 1.5 hours making and freezing 159 sausage balls. That takes care of the food I have to bring to the holiday parties I will attend in the next two weeks.

This weekend I am making vast quantities of potato cheese soup to use as Christmas gifts for Gwen's 6 teachers and therapists. I have been saving my Classico (spaghetti sauce) jars all year for soup packaging. This mass food production is kind of fun.

I am going to get my hair cut in half an hour. thank goodness because with all this humidity my hair has been looking awful.

I have been giggling all day about "Bishop Doody-Head".

I have to say that I thought with an ultrasound girls are known by LACK of special BITS. LOL
I have go the pepperoni all rolled up and in the refrigerator for overnight. Tomorrow night I will cook it. HOORAY... It was amazingly easy

Oh and Nymphette -even though you were a bad girl doing all that teasing- congratulations on Jelayna!!!

My copy of America: The Book by those lovely folks at The Daily Show just arrived.

I don't think that there will be any stuff made tonight.

I am going to sit in the living room, pet the kitty sitting on my lap, drink some tea, and laugh loudly and often.

I didn't mean that girl bits aren't special -just that they don't "hang out" like boy bits.

Remarkably, I think that bathroom is going to need a 3rd coat of paint... I have begun to contemplate ways to exploit the imperfections as an artistic choice.

Though I, too, was under the impression that ultrasound would basically tell you Boy or Probably Not Boy...

Boy did that thing hit me fast! weeeeeeeeeee

12-07-2004, 08:35 PM
Well, in fact I wouldn't really expect her to be online till a short while ago, anyway. Unless she found her phone line was working.

I don't know what all else she had planned for today; she may be busy till late.

I had quick-o tomato basil spaghetti for dinner, but added some pretty good Trader Joe's sausage.

There's a song playing now called "Bloomington" and although I don't know if it's about Bloomington, Indiana or Bloomington, Illinois, it makes me shudder. Man, that was a rough eight weeks.

They invite the senior class and when I was a senior we used to laugh at all those fat old lady alumnae will funny hairdos. Now I AM a fat old lady alumna with a funny hairdo.

I am looking like a babe today with my new haircut and my new outfit which includes a skirt. I need to work on some better accessories however.

I was reading an LJ knitting community last night and almost everyone on there was knitting instead of studying for finals.

I'm going to go back to see him tomorrow. I talked to my aunt on the phone last night and she cried. This is the first time I have heard her cry.

We are supposed to wear gaudy holiday garb to my department's christmas party on Friday. I am going to get out my Snow Queen ballerina costume for this occasion. I made it out of the poofy skirt that went under my wedding dress.

I'm not sure what kind of spice it has.
I know it has cinnamon, and cloves, and I think it might have nutmeg, and hints of cranberry. the bottle doesn't out-and-out say, which is weird... The closest thing I can compare it to is... mulling spices for wine.

I go through that kind of inverted sleep pattern at least once a month... I keep meaning to see if it's at all correlated with the phases of the moon or some other natural phenomenon.

Nights can be a very productive time if only because of the lack of distractions -- but it's so easy to spin aimlessly while the rest of the world sleeps.

I wonder if Theresa will ever tell us what a gearbox is...

Ooh, yeah. I saw some "dried plums" a few weeks back and totally cracked up.

The box of change burst and here in Chile they do not have it.

If they have or know about someone who has his favor him spido his help.
pretty funny

I wonder if Theresa will ever tell us what a gearbox is...
Gearbox
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A gearbox is an assembly of gears allowing the rotational speed of an input shaft to be changed to a different speed. Often, more than one gear ratio is provided, and a mechanism for selecting among the ratios is provided. The most common form of gearbox encountered in everyday life is that of a car with a manual transmission.

A modern car gearbox is of the constant mesh or synchromesh type, in which all gears are in mesh, but only one of which is locked to the shaft on which it is mounted at any one time, the others being allowed to rotate freely. This type of gearbox avoids the problems of wear and damage caused by bringing moving gears into mesh, however, it has higher frictional losses than the simpler type.

Heavy trucks and machinery usually are fitted with a simpler type of gearbox, known colloquially as a "crash gearbox". Here, the selected gear is brought directly into mesh, and any others are not involved. Driving a vehicle with such a gearbox requires considerable skill, including mastering the technique known as double declutching.

Synchromesh
In a synchromesh gearbox, gears can freely rotate or be locked to the shaft on which they are carried. The locking mechanism consists of a sliding collar which bridges between two circular rings with teeth on them - one travels with the gear, one with the shaft. When the rings are bridged, the gear is locked to the shaft. To correctly match the speed of the gear to that of the shaft as the gear is engaged, the collar initially applies a force to a cone-shaped clutch which is attached to the gear. This spins the gear up or down in speed to match the shaft prior to engagement of the collar. The collar is prevented from bridging the locking rings when the speeds are mismatched by baulk rings. The gear lever manipulates the collars using a set of linkages, so arranged so that only one collar may be permitted to lock a gear at any one time. In a modern gearbox, the action of all of these components is so smooth and fast it is hardly noticed.

from my basic transmission understanding;
automatic transmissions have a input shaft that comes from the torque converter ( which is connected to the engine) and and goes in to a drum with a series of clutches made out of steel and a friction material and these clutches grab at a certain RPMs, 'go in to gear' and rotate the output shaft which is connected to the driveshaft and makes the car drive.
In a manual transmission, you control when the clutch is applied and you activate a series of gears within the gearbox by selecting 1st, 2nd, 3rd &c, the in the same way the drum and steels do it for you in the automatic.

My hubby will tell probably me I have it wrong in some way, but he will be proud that I got it somewhat right :P

ETA: I can provide diagrams if needed ;)

The Canadian Supreme Court is ruling on same-sex marriage this morning.

I wish that I hadn't found that out because now I'm nervous.

The justice minister is pretty sure that the court will give the government the go ahead to introduce legislation but I don't trust him.

I usually wear steel toed boots (well, when I'm not being to lazy) when I'm in the stalls with the horses, because, ya know...they can do a lot of damage if they step on you! My finger is proof positive of that. Where are those damned steel fingered gloves when you need them?

At the architects' Christmas party this evening, there was plenty of pretty good food, as usual, and at least two really good desserts.

One was a mild pumpkin spice cake with a sugar icing with some astonishing, bizarre flavoring in it. Similar to cardamom, sort of, but not quite cardamom. I'd love to know what it was.

Also at the party was the architects' accountant, a just-more-than-acquaintance and friendly person, who had been suddenly and unexpectedly diagnosed with several forms of cancer at once about a year ago. It's the first time we've actually seen her since; she seemed quite chipper and happy, and is apparently doing well.

Well, that's etymologically correct, of course.

In Anglo-Saxon, 5 is spelled "fif," but when something (like "ten") is placed after the "fif" it's pronounced "feev." Just the same way that "thief" and "wolf" and "knife" change their final fs to v sounds when you add an "s" or "es" on the end.

I'm listening to a fascinating program on so-called nanobacteria.

My boyfriend has been extremely emotional the past two days. I'm worried about him and a little bit scared, too.

My professor is going to setup a private meeting with each of us to discuss the results of the paper we wrote. Considering that my last three encounters with her did not go well at all, I am truely not looking forward to meeting with her.

I am glad it is Friday, and I hope that you'll all have a wonderful weekend!

~ I wonder how Curlita & Dylan are doing? Good I hope!

~ This week I found out that I still have four days of paid vacation/personal time to use before the end of the year, so I don't have to work this Monday (the 13th) through Thursday (the 16th). Woot! Now I can finish my school projects & finals due next week and do some Xmas shopping & hopefully I will have time to make some gifts too.

~ Well when you put it like that.. girls sound awful :P So let me rephrase that as "Robyn deserves her sweet-as-pie, sugar-n-spice, happy, smiling, tea party having, baby doll loving, frilly dress wearing little baby girl" And then when she gets older and bratty you can trade her in for another sweet little girl :P

~ Awww. I'm all warm & fuzzy inside thinking of little Jelayna (did I spell that right?) as a toddler, probably with fiery red hair, chasing her big brothers around the house and tormenting them.

~ Oh, remember I said my boyfriend was going to make bbq glazed turkey tips for me the other night? He did and they were soooo good. In fact, I think I will demand that he make some more tonight. Mmm.

~ While I'm here I might as well chain post.

~ I look like an Army soldier today. Not on purpose, these are the only clean clothes I had to wear. I have army green khaki-type pants on, a black shirt and big clunky, chunky heeled shiny black shoes.

~ I really need to have my hair cut soon. It's getting so insanely long. The thought of cutting it off makes me a little sad though, even though it's getting all snarly and dried out on the ends because I haven't had it trimmed in so long.

nymphette
12-10-2004, 12:12 PM
i need a trim too... i hope my mom can do it while i am in qu'appelle tonight... that's where my massage is.... :)

i keep peeking out at julian playing in the snow.. is it normal to worry taht he'll fall down and bump his head and pass out in the snow and get frostbite before i realize he' s not just playing for a long time??? i'm so neurotic!!!!

i have a lead on a pre school for him!!! it's in pilot butte, which is a town over (four minute drive) and is apparently one of the better ones around... they go once a month to the elementary school in PB to acclimate the kids to kindergarten and being there.... hurrah!!

i've hit so many dead ends with the whole dycare/pre/playschool thing that i was redy to give up.....

harrison's ECIP worker gave me the contact infor yesterday!!!! :yay:

it still breaks my heart when julian asks about his friends.... :( mostly because since he's stuck at home with his baby brother and pathetic no life momma, he doen't have very many and isn't used to peer interaction and i know he must be hearbreakingly lonely.... :'( he get so excited when he meets another kid his age, it just tears me up and makes me so sad that i've pretty well ruined his life....

awww, you haven't ruined his life robyn!!!

before kindergarten, I'm pretty sure my only friends were my sisters, and their friends (who I was NOT welcome to play with:P) or possibly their friend's little sisters....and my cousin, who was the same age as me

I never went to preschool/daycare/etc. so I didn't really make any friends my age until kindergarten

My son has friends over. They're going through my house with the camcorder and digital camera trying to capture images of "ghosts."

Apparently this was the place to come in search of spirits because all his friends live in brand new homes and my place is over 100 years old.

This is probably the one and only time he'll be proud to live in this dump!

Freezing rain is probably the ickiest kind of weather on Earth. Closely followed by melting snow. No, they're not the same...

Slush is like swamp water with the mud replaced by snow...

But right now, it's snowing all pretty and white. :)

I'm supposed to be in St-Jérôme tonight, but I'll only be heading up tomorrow - by bus instead of by car.

I still haven't decided on an ISP. I found some weird stuff, and I can't figure out what the catch is, which is only making me more suspicious...

MY PHONE STILL DOESN'T WORK!!! ARGH. It's partly my fault for not taking care of the problem energetically enough.

My apartment has a full street number of its own. B)

I have next to no furniture, however.

It's not going to be very expensive to heat the apartment this winter - the downstairs neighbours heat enough for an apartment and a half. :P

oh man, I'm gonna miss the Forums over the next 2 days...

I appear to have a new "Date Guy" -- and a corresponding "date" for pizza & a movie tomorrow night. Oddly, I don't feel at all annoyed at the prospect. ;)

Could be the Bailey's Irish Cream talking. Ho ho ho & get your Hanukkah on!

I made a really cool ATC-sized book today, bound with toothpicks. The design still needs some work, but Larrissa gets my trial effort -- filled with an apology for being so late with our ATC exchange!

Biker-Mermaid: your ATCs are half done. Saint-of-the-Month people: One & a half done, more on the way!

If I can shoo "Date Guy" out of the door after pizza, I'll devote Saturday night & Sunday to art.

If he stays for coffee... no promises!

I love the new junior and senior member designation. Makes me feel important ;)

How can I get it to always post in this font? All this needs is a spell-checker and it would be really cool.

I dyed my hair over the weekend and my hubby hasn't noticed yet, you think he would at least notice the absence of the grey.

Yow. This is differenter than I expected. Gonna take a lot of getting used to. Some cool stuff so far.

I just spent awhile looking for an uncopyrighted cartoon of a guy crawling across a desert saying "Water... Water..." to alter so it would say "Forums... Forums..." but no dice.

AAAACK why can't these people program their text boxes properly?? Half the time it doesn't advance when you hit the space bar. <_<

Now I am wondering if I am a Junior or Senior member. (edited to add...now I see I am a Senior--just like at McD's where I get Senior coffee --hell no I aint that old..but I will take the discount and keep quiet!)

Not liking the new forums.

Wondering if I can change the "skin" on this thing...the red makes me want to KILL.

I like the red. Proper Nervousness red.

But maybe it's my bloodthirsty tendencies.

The gigantic sans-serif typeface may drive me up the wall, though. I'll have to see if I can change that preference when I get home.

Bonus fact: home is where you keep your stash of avatars.
