It says there are twenty-three thousand replies on this thread.
That should mean 69,000 facts, but we're not all that scrupulous around here.
I'm going to go do something else, now.

~ Tomorrow I'm going on a guided tour of the New York State Capitol Building (http://assembly.state.ny.us/Tour/). Mind you, I'm not doing this for fun. I told my sister that I would take her and a friend there because they chose this place for a school project. It's a huge building. I was there in 4th grade. I have a feeling I won't have much more fun this time than I did all of those years ago.
~ I will be spending the rest of the weekend Xmas shopping with a friend and also shopping with my boyfriend because he needs clothes for his new job.
~ I have tons of homework to catch up on.

12-03-2004, 08:12 AM
~ I suppose I shouldn't be too gloomy about going on this Capitol Building tour, at least the architecture is nice.
~ My boyfriend went into Subway last night and told me that they have toaster ovens now for toasting the subs. I thought of Larrissa. :D I guess Subway restaurants in Colorado must be more advanced than those in NY.
~ I need to think of some more ideas for Xmas gifts that I can make. I don't know what to do! Xmas will be here before I know it. I wish I knew how to knit.

1. I like "Jelayna" because more people will probably pronounce it correctly that way. Then again, I have no idea how you want it pronounced. How do you want it pronounced?
2. Jelayna (spelled like Elena) is one of the main characters in one of my favourite novels, The White Guard. Everyone is in love with her.
3. It means "light."

1. The African guitar summit was awesome. The music rocked.
2. I spent much of my time gawking at this nouveau-riche Holt-Renfrew bitch who guzzled champagne and wore a mink stoll with her black spandex hooker dress and painfully dark roots.
3. I congratulate Hammerquill on snagging a French-Canadian. I did too and I thank my lucky stars constantly.

These stupid moms are pissing me off this morning. So much snottiness! I can't be rude to them though so I am left with passiveagressive internet whining as my only recourse. Sorry.

I like Jelennah, but I think Jelayna looks prettier ;) And Brownwyn and Skye are both beautiful names...but might I suggest a "normal" middle name, so if she so chooses, she can have a "normal" name? Going to school with an "odd" name can be hell.

jelannah is a name i kind of made up after my cousin was born- her name is chelsea jalayne.... i really like jalayne but have a problem with 'name sharing' between family members... :P so i kind of just changed it a bit... rhymes with 'alannah' i guess... jalayna is pronounced juh-lay-nuh....
i've loved the name bronwyn for years- a boyfriend of mine in high school's dad and step mom had a baby girl they named bronwyn... i think it is so pretty.. but the rest of my family HATES it.... <sigh> 'i can't picture calling a baby 'bronwyn'!! that's not a baby name! she'll get called winnie!' well, considering the fact that you spend about 2 years of your life as a baby.... <_< i dont' see the problem!!!
jelena is russian for 'shining light'-it's the closest meaning i could find for jelannah in a baby name list!!! :o i think it's apretty name too, but i've had jelannah picked out for like 20 years as y 'girl name'... :P

I've always liked the name Rowan for a boy. If I ever have another child (which is doubtful) and if it is a boy, I will name him Rowan.
There was a boy I knew in college named Roman. He was from Czechoslovakia, had the most beautiful blue eyes and long, elegant hands. I had a huge crush on him!

Yes, I think I recall that book, but only on store shelves. Wouldn't mean much to me.
I read many of the Pern books when I was young, but almost nothing else of hers.
The main references I have to "Rowan" are magical references from Steeleye Span's "Twelve Witches" and from Tolkien and Lewis and other suchlike books. Always referring to the tree, but it just sounds feminine to me. Possibly the name "Rowena" is partly responsible. I'll have to check the Anglo-Saxon word for the tree, see what gender it actually has.

I rather enjoy being out of the cultural loop on things like Spongebob.
I still haven't exactly figured out what he is and where from. I know he's an annoying cartoon character, but the first time I ever heard of him was when he appeared as Meika's avatar, and then she posted a picture of her posing with him. I later saw him on a box of commercially produced inedible food sent to me by an evil person in Jesusland.
Now I hear on NPR's Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me that large inflatable display Spongebobs around the country are being stolen, and I keep expecting one to show up here. Like, amid Meika's light display or something. Either that or it'll become the next paranoiac terrorist scare, following up on the Stolen UPS Uniforms scare: Spongebobs may reappear, concealing weapons of mass destruction!
As I said, it's much more interesting only having a vague idea what this particular cultural icon is.

One of the things which hurt most when my one previous long-term relationship ended was dividing up the Christmas ornaments.

Of course, at my grandmother's for Christmas, there's no real need to provide extra treats. One of my cousins called my aunt from a football game to ask how my uncle was doing. Well, he might be dying so it's really kind of inappropriate to call from a stand full of screaming sports fans. <_<
My sister and my cousins can appear so selfish and insensitive at times. Their seeming callousness helps me remember that all we really have are the people we love and we should treat each other with the utmost care. Every time they act like jerks to my mom or my aunt I try to do something nice to make up for it and they are giving me so many opportunities to do this that they are wearing me out.

 I didn't know you could get to the melting point of Velveeta® with common household implements. Or does Gwensdad keep a kiln or oxyacetylene rig out in the garage?
I've always wondered if one is supposed to remove the transparent sheets from the sides of Velveeta®. I bet they improve the flavor. And texture.
My grandmother virtually sundered a friendship when the answer to "what kind of cheese do you like?" was "Velveeta®." She managed to stay polite, but never ventured to bring food to the guy again.

Ha! I had never had Velveeta growing up. My mom had banned it from the house after she and my dad were married. For some reason my dad started getting all nostalgic for the food of his youth when I was in high school. Once he bought Velveeta and made grilled "cheese" sandwiches with it for a mom-less dinner. My brother and I were NOT impressed. He never bought it again. I wonder if he ever misses it.
I'm going to be consuming chickpeas for dinner, lovingly cooked by ptichka.

Velveeta is spongy and easy to melt. The box boasts that it is better than cheddar cheese because it has less fat and melts more easily.
I will admit to using velveeta in a certain kind of homemade soup. The first time I had it I loved it and didn't know it had velveeta in it until I got the recipe.
I have not left the house today and now I have cabin fever.

Of course, the same could be said for paraffin. And it has no added sugar!
OTOH, one of my grandmother's Christmas cookie recipes actually uses paraffin, and I eat those...
I wonder, now that she's thrown out the aged, annotated, dog-eared Joy of Cooking she'd used for more than fifty years ( ), if the new one she got uses real ingredients like butter to aid the melting of chocolate for the coating of the bottom of florentines.

have you ever read "Frederick" by Leo Lionni? It is a book about ART and Poetry.
the worst book I ever read was probably "Portnoy's Complaint" I felt cheap and used after I finished it

Oh, there are lots of Dickenses I haven't read. I keep starting Bleak House and getting not too far into it. But then, the fog description right at the beginning is so completely unbeatable, it's worth just reading over and over.
And yes, the gargoyles are glorious. I adore Dickens's prose style. But you know, Gargoyles, and high-peaked steeples, and finials and cornices are actually integral parts of the architecture, the structure itself; when the modernists started discarding them, assuming they were mere naïve gaudy affectation, they ran into all kinds of permanence/maintenance problems with large buildings.
I think I should get offline and do something. I tried once a little while ago, but the computer sucked me back in.

1. Here ye! Here ye! :) :) This is so true. One of the biggest mistakes you can make in your life is too spend your time "checking out the other side of the fence" Be mindful of your own pasture first and don't worry about what's growing over in your neighbors, most of the time it's an illusion anyway.
2. I'm not much for the BBQ, but the fruit salad is excellent over there, nothing is canned and it's all fresh citrus and pineapple so I do believe I have had my share of Vitamin C for the day.
3. Whatever happened to telephone booths? I wish they would comeback into vogue. Example: I had to use my cell phone in the noisy restaurant, so rather than wade though the crowd of people standing at the door, I went into the restroom. A lady came in and didn't know I was on the phone in the next stall.
I said to the person I was speaking with on the phone "Can you please help me" and she thinks I was talking to her and starts saying things like "What's wrong, are you allright? Do you need some help?" Fortunately my party put me on hold and I was able to explain to the woman (good samaritan that she was) that I really didn't need any help, I was fine, just trying to find a quite place to make a call on my cell phone.

I've always liked the United Church. I like New Testament, Golden Rule types of churches.
I was harrassed by Mormons on the bus today.
I am now in possession of twenty essays on The Idiot.

i went to ucc for a while in connecticut. that pastor was the person who comforted me and helped me when everything hit the fan, including the baby and the bathwater.
i think i am about to start going to friends meetings. the distance between what they say and what they do is so short. i respect that.
i bought masa for making tamales. and hominy for pozole.
hey, i have a question. i have this pork roast thing that is not a good cut, but i didn't care about that when i bought it because i want to cook it until it falls apart. how do i do that? can i put it in a pot with broth and seasoning and simmer it? does the liquid have to cover it?

Well sugar, just come on down, you can probably find an interesting temp job at the courthouse here and then you can do lunch at Sunny's with me!
For instance, the case we're working on this afternoon is against Staples...I love these cases against corporate employers. They think they can break all the rules and "sock it" to the little guys who are working for peanuts.

1. Pork Roast simmering in the Crockpot with about a cup of apple juice and some sweet potatoes and apple slices or some mixed dried fruits, etc on low 6 to 8 hrs or more depending on size and cut of meat.
2. Running off copies on the Xerox monster printer, must put ear plugs in.
3. I'm just fiddling around now, waiting for 3pm and everything to print.

Mmmm! That sounds delicious! I might have to pick up a pork roast tonight and cook that for tomorrow!
I really need to get offline and do some work, but nothing is pressing at the moment...so I guess I'll goof off for another 10 minutes or so.
My contacts are killing me and I forgot to bring my glasses today. Poo!

I am hoping that 3 o'clock is quitting time..not when you finally get to print :D
If I were home I would SO be painting or making ATCs
You ladies obviously judge cute on a lower level than people I know in person (or maybe I was just photogenic that day.)
edited to add: its the dimples...dimples are always attractive to females. (but darn..they don't do much for my MACHO image)

~ I think winter has officially started here in Upstate NY. Big snowflakes everywhere. The ground looks like a big, white (COLD) blanket. It's pretty but I'm not looking forward to cleaning it off of my car at the end of the day and driving home on slippery roads. <_<
~ There is no heat in my cubicle and there is a vent blowing cold air on me so I'm sitting here with my coat on. If I could type with my gloves on I would be wearing those too. The working conditions I am exposed to in this builidng should be (or maybe they are??) illegal. The last I knew we didn't even have running water in the bathroom sinks. <_<
~ sarahkate is grumpy today.

That's very sad, who in the hell are you working for? Ebenezzer Scoorge? Gawd, what a Dickens description that is. I'll say the secretarie's prayer for you. Call code enforcement and the health department.

1. Yes, but don't get your hopes up there either. They are on the WRONG side these days.
2. The Plaintiff arrives, and goes for coffee downstairs, The attorney's come in here looking for him. It's time for court. I told them they could find the plaintiff down in the coffee shop. They replied " But we're due in court NOW! *PANIC*
 so they left on the elevator.
Then the plaintiff returns with a cup of hot coffee and I said "They were here looking for you and they have gone to the court room you'd better get down there!" The plaintiff said, "Well here you go, I guess I won't have time to drink this". Oh well, Thank you, very much. with cream and no sugar just the way I like it.
3. It's just what I needed after all that printing, collating, and typing. It doesn't look like I'll be getting out of here till maybe 5:30. I have to wait and there's a lull so I may as well play here for awhile. Break time!

~ I work for a company that you just mentioned in one of your recent 3RF posts today...the evil company that begins with the letter "X" (I'm trying to be sneaky here so my bosses/coworkers don't google and find me bitching here :P). But, as much as I hate being an employee of "X" (for various reasons) the working conditions in this building aren't completely their fault.
~ See, we here at "X" are a contracted company at GE. The buildings here are all owned by GE and this building that I'm just so lucky to work in was built somewhere between the 50s and 70s I believe. It's falling apart and they are currently removing asbestos from it. Oh yeah! My coworkers & I are the only ones left in this 5-story building. It's creepy and gross. I think they are trying to find a new building for us to work in but they can't find any place that will accomodate us, even though they have been talking about moving us for quite a while.
~ I shouldn't be complaining too much. Someone finally turned the heat on, so it's warmer, but when the vents start blowing warm air they stink! :P

~ We have had OSHA inspections here. I don't know how this place has managed to pass all of these years. It's embarrassing working in such a cruddy place.
~ My boyfriend's so sweet. I recently had bbq glazed turkey tips at a restaurant that I really liked, so he is going to attempt making them for me tonight. I'm so hungry! I can't wait!
~ Oh I have work to do. Bummer.
