2. Got home and it was already dark but I got the mail out of the box anyways, check it out on that thread, "What did you find in your box today?" etc.

3. I'm caved in good with some silver bullets and Marilyn Monroe in "River of No Return" I might even screw with my sewing machine and cuss a little.

I went to Williams-Sonoma with ptichka because we have four hundred odd dollars in gift certificates to spend there.

We bought a thirty-two-dollar grill pan.

We mocked just about everything else in the store.

Williams-Sonoma can be a very mockworthy experience. It's quite a shiny place.

I find it difficult to take a store selling twelve-dollar jars of cinnamon-sugar for toast seriously.

I find it even more difficult to take people who can't mix sugar with cinnamon on their own seriously.

I don't know how we're going to spend all of that money there.

According to a statistical study done at UC Berkeley (http://ucdata.berkeley.edu/new_web/VOTE200...ction04_Sum.pdf (http://ucdata.berkeley.edu/new_web/VOTE2004/election04_Sum.pdf)) Bush got 130,000 more votes than he should have in the Florida counties that used electronic machines rather than paper ballots.

One line from the report is "We can be 99.9% sure that these effects are not attributable to chance."

It would have taken more than that to swing Florida, but what about those closer states?

Helquin
11-19-2004, 10:09 PM
Actually, there is quite a movement supporting recounts and voter fraud investigations in several states.

I was surprised to learn that one major obstacle challengers face in Ohio is the amount of money it costs just to request a vote audit. Apparently the filing fees are formidable.

Why aren't people more alarmed that the government charges money to ensure justice?!

I had a $75 gift certificate there. Before I went in, knowing their product ie; $500 stand mixers, I wondered if I would find anything I would actually need within my price range.

I bought a grill pan also (on sale), a small stainless steel frying pan that has revealed itself to be useless (everything sticks), and some measuring spoons that will fit inside spice jars. I got some change back too.

I bought a Schilling brand jar of cinnamon-sugar ONCE but it was only $2-$3. Now I have one of those shakers that traditionally have dried red pepper or parmesan in them filled with my cinnamon-sugar.

I started building my bed and then got distracted by a phone call and Larrissa's request to grocery shop... now it is late and I haven't finished it. I have to be up in 6-1/2 hours.

My grandfather took pity on me and sent me a surprise check in the mail because he knows how tight things have been lately.

He wrote "Mac n Cheese" on the memo line, so I'm going to take a picture in the grocery store of me pushing a huge cart of mac n cheese and mail it to him. He'll love it. Hell, the whole town will probably hear about it.

We've had a friend clue us in on how to get the most bang for your buck there. We're waiting until after Christmas to pick up some red silicone spoons.

I think that my parents once bought the same Schilling cinnamon-sugar. We then used that jar to hold the homemade stuff.

The kitchen towels are pretty reasonably priced, however. Maybe we'll get some of those.

1. I see someone giving up her life in this small town today. Last month she had a nervous breakdown and the police came with the Baker Act and hauled her away screaming in a patrol car. She had been trying to deal with being an elementary school teacher, the breakup of her marriage and subsequent divorce, and had been taking various forms of perscribed medication. It's too sad, and I thought she was very brave to have tried to cope on her own for as long as she did.

2. I see that some people are moving her things out of the house and a "For Sale" sign is posted, probably some of her relatives, realtors or whomever they are.

3. Maybe she's still in the hospital, I don't know, she tried to holler a phone number to me while she was in the squad car but when I called it I never got though, just a recording to leave my number and they never returned the call.

not a condensed essay, a condensed book

they take the most important parts of a novel, and compress it into a shorter version, and put 3-5 in an anthology

they always turn out quite good....and it was sad

I'm fixing up some broken recycled lamps today that I have picked up around town, people throw out the good stuff and buy new junk.

One is a really neat brass floor lamp with a table around it in the midsection for whatever clutter stuff you need under bright light and sitting beside you, it's like new, but the little switch top was missing from it.

The other one I don't know if it's salvageable although the wires seem to work, the prongs what hold the light shade are bent to hell and maybe I can pull it out with some pliers....

I have an old chandelier I've been wanting to repair as well...I can be found in the lighting dept at All-Marts...

after that I'm going to Blackpool for the Illuminations.....Heh heh

I know my Florida geography, but I thought the same thing when I read that answer! Who the heck will know where Pensacola is?!

It's PANHANDLE country! Not sure where Velma is vacationing, but most East Coast folks tend to favor Orlando (for Disney), Atlantic Coast towns like Daytona & New Smyrna (for beaches), Miami (for retirement) or Key West (for go-go boys).

I have made a mess and appear to be adhesive now. Little pieces of paper are clinging to me... and is that goop in my goatee?

we had a family thing at my aunt and uncle's yesterday... appetizers and stuff and a nice visit....

and julian ended up breaking a banister in their front foyer thing.... :( i was so mad because he was just out of control whiel we were there!!!

mostly becuase when i get together with my family and he does something he KNOWS he isnt' supposed to do (or doesnt' do something he IS supposed to) and i tell him to or scold him, then everyone jumps in and says' oh, it's okay, don't worry, leave him alone, he's only four, it's fine, just let him do it, don't worry about him doing that'.... on and on and it drives me up the freaking wall!!!!!!!!

he also stayed at my mom's on thursday night- after whining and crying and being told he could sleep over friday... and then me telling him that he had to stop pitching the fit or he wouldn't be allowed to go the next night... then my mom says 'oh, let' spack your bag- stop crying and you can come with me tonight'................. he's now grounded form nana sleepovers for two weeks because he was ROTTEn when he came home and from now on when MOMMY says no, it doesn't matter what nana says.... i am okay with being the bad guy... as long as i have a child who knows that bad behavior does NOT GET REWARDED, i am okay with hearing 'me not like you!' until my mom goes home....

yes i ws pissed off.....

nymphette
11-22-2004, 08:17 AM
my mom thinks that i expect too much from him....

he is such a well behaved, polite, wonderful child....

until he is let to get away with being lippy (which i dont' let him) or eating whatever crappy sugary junkfoods that he thinks he wants without eating a single bite of real food for a meal (which does NOT happen at home) or getting his way when he pitches a fit about something that he has been told 'no' about.....

when we get groceries, he is allowed to pick out a treat for himself- anythign he wants- whether it's a bottle of rootbeer, a little bag of treats, some chips, a small toy, whatever.... 9 times out of ten he'llpick a pint of strawberries or a head of cauliflower (that he doesnt' have to share, because it's his.. :P) or a gatorade type of drink.... he makes good choices on his own about what he wants to eat and drink... but when he's let to have free reign in a cupboard full of cookies, chips, candy, dunkaroos, fruit jelly snacks, etc, and not even asked twice to eat part of his real meal, well, he's FOUR.... so he gets wired and out of control on shit........ especially since he is nt used to having that kind of stuff routinely......

argh!!! i am just so frustrated!!!! sorry for bitching about it so much... it's just taken me from thursday night till now... wait, when he went to bed last night he was still rotten........ to get him back to 'normal'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and guess who woke up at 5:30 feelign sick???? and who had to get up with him, on the one day in known recollection that she was able to sleep in (because chris was taking harrison in for his bloodwork) and take care of a whiny child who felt like he ws going to throw up and who's tummy hurt real bad??? yup. me.

and julian sounds like little weirdo, picking fruits and veggies over candy for a treat... but he LOVES them... and why shouldn't he pick something he loves, and doesn't have to share because it's HIS treat, over something crappy???

he likes to have candy etc as a treat too... but if asked, he'll usually pick a 'snack' over a 'treat'... peanut butter and apples over microwave popcorn... watermelon over licorice.... etc...

boy, i think i am starting to sound defensive.... oh well... it just burns my butt when i am undermined in my parenting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! argh!!!!

Hello people!

~ I actually had a good weekend, a weekend that I don't regret. It was fun and a bit lazy, yet a bit productive too. In fact, my weekend was so good I'm still in a good mood on a Monday morning. Unheard of! :D

~ I suppose a big factor contributing to my happiness at the moment is money. Thanks to my college loan refund (the portion not used for tuition and books this semester), I got a big fat check in the mail. Now I can buy Christmas presents & other things. Hurray!

~ My boyfriend just found out this morning he was offered a job he interviewed for on Friday. Yay! If he decideds to take the job this means quite a bit more money. He is hoping his current employer offers him more money to stay though, because he does like his job, it just doesn't pay enough.

sarahkate

~ I love Hannaford (grocery store) for having a huge natural foods section. Yesterday I bought a few things there, including a can of butternut squash soup which I haven't tried yet. I hope it's good. If not I'm sure adding a bunch of brown sugar will do the trick.

~ Speaking of butternut squash I can't wait to eat my mom's cooking on Thursday. She always makes lots of mashed butternut squash with tons of brown sugar just because she knows I love it.

~ Despite the good food, holidays just stress me out. Every year my boyfriend try to figure out a way to actually spend a holiday together for once. But as always his mom's overbearing, insane ways (meaning she would be all irate and pissy if her boy wasn't there on a holiday and act as though the holiday would just be RUINED) and my mom's hermit ways (meaning she doesn't want to go anywhere despite being invited by other people, including my boyfriend's mom, to their Thanksgiving dinners) have prevented us from spending the day together. He will go have dinner with his family & I will eat with my sister and mom in my mom's little cramped apartment which reaks of nicotine. <_<

awww, Robyn, I know how frustrating that must be for you!!! When I'm a mommy, I'm going to be exactly like you, so don't you think you're the "bad mommy"

It's even worse on the other end of the stick...my "niece" Zoe is over at my friend's house more than @ her own home, and we teach her good things, we discipline her, and then she goes home and her mother does nothing so she loses it all <_<

I think she's a lot better now, tho, that she's actually in school :D I can't believe she's in Kindergarten....

Robyn, I sometimes feel like I am a bad mommy too because I expect her to act like a 'big kid' when she's only 2 1/2, I let her eat stuff that isn't technically 'crap' (goldfish, fruit snacks, juice boxes), and since I LOATHE veggies I do not feed her stuff I know she NEEDS to eat.

She lives on Cheerios, pancakes and PB&J. Although when we go grocery shopping and we are in the produce section she always demands a baby carrot from the bin of loose mixed raw veggies.

My mom is a food nazi so other than spoiling her with 'stuff' my mom would probably feed her better than I do if I ever let Megan stay there. (I have spent a combined total of probably 3 days away from Megan in the last 2 1/2 years.)

i'm feeling much more hopeful about everything today. he's thinking about going to work for my uncle. it would be weird because sometimes he would be away for a couple of nights at a time. but my god, the money. insurance...the whole thing. i don't even know what we would do with all that money. hmm...yes, send lots of mail i'm sure. i don't know. we'll see. not sure if him being away so often is the best idea right now.

1. Two weeks or so ago I noticed the toilet in our main bathroom was leaking from the tank, so we turned the water supply off, flushed the water out of the tank and have been using it on an emergency only basis.
a. A few days ago I then noticed the vinyl tiles were lifting from the floor arround the toilet, I pulled the corner of one up and the floor is water damaged and swelled up.
b. Yesterday morning the hubby pulls up more tiles and discovers a plethora of moldy wood.
c. Last night at 11 PM we removed the toilet, started scraping off the tiles and discovered that the previous owners had laid MDF (multi-density fibreboard) over the plywood sub floor, and laid the vinyl tiles over that. Well, when MDF gets wet it swells because it is essentially glue, saw dust and wood chips.

2. By Midnight we had the entire floor torn out except for what is under the vanity because we really did not want to have to tear out the tiles.
a. The plywood under the MDF in a 2 foot radius around the toilet has extensive water damage and is black with mold.
b. While tearing it out the hubby remarked that the upside is that I will never have to mop that crappy floor again.
c. I was walking to the trash bin with a bag of tiles and jagged MDF, tripped on the step between the kitchen and laundry room, twisted my ankle, fell and cut my hand on a nail.
d. The hubby got mad at me because instead of paying attention to what I was doing I was being the control freak that I am and telling him how to do something.

3. So now we have to replace the sub-floor around the toilet and by the shower, replace the potty, lay new vinyl tiles, repaint and replace the baseboerds ALL BY THURSDAY! Luckily all that should not be too dificult.
a. I said we should just shut the door and make the rule that boys have to pee in the backyard and the girls can use our master bathroom.
b. I have had the tiles picked out for over 2 years, hopefully it is still in stock at Home Depot
c. Hopefully my mom's boyfriend will be cool and help out with a minimum of bitching and MFing us for not doing the demo job right or for just doing it the weekend before Turkey day in the first place.

bonus fact: Through all of the scraping, pounding and shop-vacing Megan stayed in bed and woke up fresh as a daisy this morning...wish I could say the same. My ankle is only a little sore but sore enough to ruin my day.

1. The power has been off here for three hours, so as a result nothing is getting done.

2. When we called the frigging power company to report the outage, we reached the automated system and didn't get any explanation from a human. You have to talk to the robot, push the right buttons and maybe they will let you know what the hell is going on.

3. We took 2 1/2 hours for lunch (Fish Shack) waited 2 1/2 more hours listening to the Transistor Battery Radio and now it's almost time to go home, so much for Monday.

That color I picked out for the bathroom is (whoa!) pretty red. I always forget that color looks different when it's covering a whole wall and not just one little 2-inch sample chip.

I'm resisting an urge to confront my brother about his dishonorable behavior, still going strong after 2 months. He should know better. He does know better. <_<

Crappy weather again... and possible snow flurries in the forecast for Turkey Day. Bleh. Grrr. Arrgh. Ptui. I'm a little cranky.

NoFrills was surprisingly painless.

Winter has begun with the first old Italian men yelling at me, "Such a pretty girl! Where's your hat?"

My season of self-control has also begun as I resist the urge to punch all the old Italian men I meet on the street.

~ Poor Tana!!! :( I'm worried we are going to have the same problem at my house with our bathroom. There is water damage but we are too afraid to pull up the linoleum to see how much damage has been done. And we only have one bathroom in the whole house, so if we start to tear everything apart it has to be done quickly. Eek! Good luck with fixing up the rest of the loo & I hope your ankle feels better!

~ I want to make some lip balm. I have never tried before but I found a vegan recipe that looks good. Now the problem is finding the necessary ingredients.

~ Oh, I had a dream last night about Zanna! It was so strange and felt so REAL. Even thinking back on it now, it seems like it's an actual memory, not just remembering a dream. In the dream I was in Zanna's dorm which looked like a huge fancy old victorian house. She was in her bedroom with the door open and I ran past in the hallway. I heard a voice shout "SarahKate!" so I peaked into her doorway and I knew it was her. I flopped down on her bed because I was tired and asked "how did you know it was me?" "Because of your black hair. I knew it had to be you." "But I don't have black hair," I thought but didn't say out loud. Then I walked around the streets of some city with her and some strange girls. Very odd indeed.

It's on the wall, and feels dry to the touch. It definitely needs another coat, though. A lot of the original white is showing through, making the red more vivid.

At least that's what I'm hoping.

It wouldn't be the first time I've painted the same room twice without removing the masking tape. :D

I went through a phase of watching all those TLC "home improvement" shows when I first bought the house. They're a hoot!

Zhenechka

There's something special about red paint. It usually takes a gazillion coats to get on and then a gazillion coats to paint over.

I'd like a red wall in the living room.

It would match the new rug.

Helquin
11-22-2004, 02:47 PM
I once painted a wall of my dining room what I thought was a wonderful, warm shade of terra cotta.

The next morning, I was so appalled at the shriek of pumpkin orange that I went out immediately to get a different color.

At least the bathroom is a small room, and the red is only on the lower half of the walls. I may sponge something over the red if I don't like it after the 2nd coat...

Three years ago we had a medium sized freezer that we never used. We gave it to a friend of Gwensdad's from work. This guy buys and cooks food in bulk and then gives it to people who need it.

Today this same guy sent a truckload of cooked frozen food home with Gwensdad. There is a turkey, a hen, a huge slab of beef, green beans, gravy, mashed potatoes, sausage biscuits, corn bread and fried chicken.

After all these years I still feel strange to be on the receiving end of charitable acts. But when people do things like this it gives me hope.

still working on my book (reading it, not writing)

strange dreams last night, I'm sure there'll be more tonight

The new U2 song irritates me, Bono is counting 1, 2, 3, 14 in the begining!

I am freezing! Must be below 70 in my house :P

I got absolutely no productive cleaning done today for turkey day.

Inspired by Helquin, I am going to go dig out my Jackson5 CDs. Woot!

I'm having a really hard time coming up with two more facts.

I'm happy that Thanksgiving isn't such a big deal in Canada, although ptichka has informed me that that's because she's francophone. If I'd married an anglo...

~ My coworkers have already started to decorate the office for Christmas. Too early if you ask me!

~ Somehow I got hooked on watching "The Amazing Race." Some of the contestants are just so evil... they are all yelling at and insulting their boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse/friend/relative.

~ Why am I posting here? I have nothing to say! :P

When we had a television, I also loved watching The Amazing Race.

I'm cleaning out iTunes. Hmmm...I have some questionable songs in there.

And not enough Elvis (Costello)! Where's Elvis?

If you guys can't tackle the Linux, at least switch your browser to Mozilla!!!!!

The plumbers are here trying to fix the bathtub. Finally. It's only been going on for a month. My water usage was DOUBLE what it was the month before and I am so taking the bill to my landlord.

I re-read some journal pages last night and they spooked me. Especially the one from what the psychic told me would happen and HOLY HELL she was actually right.

~ Mashed potatoes... butternut squash .... dinner rolls ... oooh I can't wait until tomorrow!

~ My college loan refund money is dwindling quickly. I better start coming up with more ideas for inexpensive handmade gifts!
