1. I called in sick to work today because I was feeling good, creative, energetic and didn't want work to squash that. I spent the morning writing and working on nness stuff. (Here comes the rationalization . . .) I figure it all balances out because I have gone to work sick plenty of times. Once I went to work straight from the hospital having been diagnosed with pluerisy. I figure, when I'm miserable, I may as well be at work! (Yes, yes, I know this means I should find a different line of work.)

2. I almost always use sick days as "mental health days"--to keep me from going out of my mind.

2. I will probably work voluntary overtime tomorrow and the next day so my paycheck won't be too short.

1. i just got back from a two and a half hour long honors convocation, where I was recognized for an award i recieved 3 months ago

1. So, I'm moving this weekend, kind of weird feeling but I'll be back in 3 months.
2. I had no idea I have so many clothes, I've already filled 2 large boxes and have a long ways to go. Where did all of these clothes? It's kind of funny cause I wear the same batch of clothes most of the time, and the rest are just there if I feel in the mood one day. I guess since all of my clothes come from thrift stores I buy a whole lot cause they don't cost as much and it's not that big of a loss if I don't wear them a lot.
3. I have to find a job and I don't want to, darn. I really don't know what kind of job I can find since it's only for the summer and I'll be gone half of July. And since being in college all I've studied is art, hmm...

one more family thought, then onto... hm....

1: my grandmother (mom's mom) married my grandfather (obviously... http://nervousness.org/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ) and her two sisters (who look remarkably lik eher) married his two brothers (who, again, look a lot like him!!!) i always thought that was pretty neat, the 3 sisters and 3 brothers... not much of an extended family though..

2: i am burnt from my fingertips to my hairline to the middle of my chest, and mid thigh down... you'd think by (almost) 30 you'd learn to put sunscreen on your fair, red headed skin... sigh... out hostessing (??) a garage sale all day...

3: i have had my kids' names, for a boy and a girl, picked out for the past 19 years!!! i did get to use 'julian christopher chase' for my boy, but no girls... my second son is 'harrison liam kiefer'... NO LAUGHING!!!! and he is NOT named after even ONE movie star (though julian is very named after julian lennon...) we didnt' even realize all three were somewhat 'famous' until i wrote the name down together... we didnt' care though, we loved them together like that!!!!

1 - On Children: While I was visiting my father and stepmother this past weekend they kept asking me when I was going to give them some grandchildren. Since I don't even know ANY men socially, after three days of this I told them that if they could find me a husband I'd adopt some grandchildren for them. A very strange and unsettling light came into their eyes when I said this. I'd be worried but I live two states away. You see, they're Mormon and want big family quite badly. My mother. on the other hand, has long thought that my having responsibility for children might be a bad idea. http://nervousness.org/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

2 - I don't know if I want children. I wouldn't have my own because of the health problems I have and the ones that I could pass on, but sometimes I think that I'd be a decent parent.

3 - My great-grandmother claimed that we're related to William the Conquerer and Mark Twain, but she's not the most reliable source and I've yet to see any proof of this.

Bonus:
4 - I somehow have got a black eye, but I don't know how it happened.

1-- Andrew Jackson is a relative of mine. My mom's mother's mother was a jackson...

2-- My great uncle on my father's side once managed Josephine Baker in Europe (too cool).

3-- Since I've practically raised my little half-brothers, I will probably never want to have kids. I've always been more of a cat mommy than anything else.

<and because I sympathise with nymphette> 4--I had a garage sale over the weekend (forsaking a day at work) and made a grand total of $30... Did I mention I really don't like people who try to haggle over the price of something worth a dollar or two, but marked a quarter?

1. I have a canvas floor-to-ceiling banner, about a foot wide, on which I measure my children's height periodically. My mother did the same thing on a door frame and when they moved they had to paint over twenty-five years of measurements of children, grandchildren, and friends. It was heartbreaking. (Personally, I'd have pulled the board and rebuild the doorframe).

2. I'm going to have to give up my cellphone for financial reasons...sigh.

3. My husband has 11 siblings. His mother and eldest sister were pregnant at the same time, twice, so there are aunt/niece and uncle/nephew relationships that celebrate the same birthdays in the same years and are good buddies. There's now another generation, which means Brett's youngest brother Lance (along with all the rest) is a great-uncle to his good friend and nephew David's daughter--and Lance is 19. Monica, too, at 21, is about to become a great-aunt to her friend and niece's child...

[/b][/quote]

Recently, at a friends house, I penciled in the height of her children on the back door frame without even asking permission from my friend! What is this compulsion to measure children? Or adults, for that matter. The one semester I lived in a dorm, my roommates and I took the measurement of every friend and aquaintance who came through our door, and wrote their names next to it. Since I left that college after one semester, I have often wondered if my roommates were penalized for the "graffiti" when their room was inspected at the end of the year.

1. Because I must mail out Nervousness stuff today, I am debating whether to go to the closest post office with the grumpiest workers or the friendliest post office which is a bit out of my way, but not by much.

2. I am resisting the urge to go to the craft store "just to look" because I know I'd wind up buying. However, there is a good craft store in the very same shopping center as the friendly post office and if I did go to that p.o. it would be a shame not to just stop in the store for a minute or two . . .

3. Hairdressers often comment that i have an "interesting hairline." It doesn't really seem out of the ordinary to me which does make me wonder why people feel they must comment on it. But then I don't go around inspecting other peoples hairlines (as a general rule http://nervousness.org/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif ).

2. i learned about the birds and the bees when i was about 5 and my friend trish told me at a big picnic that her parents were throwing. i remember marching up to my parents in front of everyone and asking them very loudly if it was true in fact, that babies came from having sex. i also remember everyone laughing very hard.

Bonus:

Good old memories:

1. At 16: Sitting at the back of a crowded hall with my boyfriend during a variety show in which the emcee was struggling to keep the space filled between acts, and hearing, "I understand the Mauldin children are in the audience, and I've run out of jokes here...Could you guys come up and sing?" Going up with my sister and brother and doing "Poor Boy" and a couple others in close harmony, spur of the moment, audience of hundreds. :^ )

2. At 20: Being called to the information desk at college, where I was handed a dozen red roses and a note from my Dad, who had driven me to school but forgot it was my birthday until I was already in class.

3. Sleeping out with my brother and sisters during the summer, talking and watching for falling stars and satellites until we fell asleep midsentence.

1. Sleeping turned into quite the chaotic affair for me last night: I went to bed, then heard the cat banging on the garage door -- seems someone let her out & forgot to let her in. I got out of bed, went to let her in, and realized that the garage door was up, and she'd been out prowling around for about 4 hours (she's an indoor cat only). I went back to bed, and woke up with a spider crawling on me. I only freaked out a little, and tried to ignore it. Woke up time #2, with Spider #2 crawling on me. Freaked out a little more, and decided to sleep on the living room couch. Moved furniture in the dark to allow me to sleep on couch, and tossed & turned until 4:30 am. Tried the floor, and decided it wasn't much better. Then I had to pee, and decided since i was up, I'd try my bed again. Went to bed, tossed & turned, finally fell asleep, only for my cell phone alarm to go off an hour early @ 6:22. Turned it off, slept til real alarm went off @ 7:22.

I'm very tired.

1) Yesterday while driving around with my Mum and aunt, I saw a VR postbox! Not too amazing except that just a few days before Mum heard an American guy on the radio say there was only one left in the country, and that it was in Buxton (this one wasn't!).
2) My mother is a photographer, and one of the things she takes photos of is old/unusual postboxes; needless to say she was ecstatic
3) The VR box is just a street away from my new house http://nervousness.org/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

2. I don't know what Tim Tams are, either, but after reading just a couple paragraphs of that article, I am going to ask my neice if she can possibly send me some.

3. When my sister's son did his Flat Stanley report, his teacher asked my sister in astonishment, "Wow, does your sister live like this EVERY WEEK?" Leslie said I did, and she's right--other than taking F. Stanley along to the stuff we wanted to go to, we changed nothing about our daily lives...Now I feel like I live such an exciting life, which is funny since said sister is a performing opera singer, runs an opera outreach, is head of the charter-school support movement in her area, etc. etc. Kind of always thought I was the boring one...Best thing--Leslie video'd the report! So I get to see it Sunday when I'm in Boise for my birthday and the 4th of July.

1. I could never take naps or sleep during the day either. Even when I was very sick. My mother finally gave up on making me take a nap as a child. She finally gave me the option of either napping or reading/playing quietly in my room (so she could nap!). But in my late twenties that all changed. First with very short naps--10 or twenty minutes. They got progressively longer and now I could sleep everyday for an hour or two in the afternoon (if I wasn't working!)

2. Since I had the day off, I *did* sleep for an hour this afternoon. When I woke up, both cats were passed out on the bed with me. A real "cat nap" http://nervousness.org/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

2. I used to work in a neighborhood mall that had a group in to square dance every Sunday afternoon. There was rarely an audience. One day the dancers were all wearing paper rabbit ears given to them by the mall easter bunny. Watching a bunch of people twirl around in square-dance costumes and bunny ears, listening to the tape recorded dance calls echoing through an almost empty mall is one of the strangest, most surreal things I have seen.

1. Bugitha reminded me of this funny memory. A few months ago my neighbors (who I didn't speak to yet) had a huge party in our houses backyard. It was the funniest thing I've seen in quite a while cause I didn't know what they were doing so my friends and I just kept coming up with ideas as to what they were doing. Anyway, this is what was going on. There were at least 50 people crammed into this little yard dressed in tuxes and prom dresses mainly. But a few people were in full costumes, like bunny suits and Jesus outfit. Then there was a person in a bride outfit in the front that everyone was looking at and a guy next to her on a cross ( you know like a crucifix but without the nails.) They were singing hymnal songs and wedding songs and drinking cheap 40 oz's( for those that use the metric system that's I think 2 and a half beers in one bottle, very cheap beer). We could not figure out what the hell they were doing, especially when they drove their car through the yard and pulled out a fire extenguisher and were spraying it everywhere. We later found out it was just a drunk, college party pretending to have a funny wedding.
2. I'm taking 2 summer classes online, Writing 122 and World Civilization. I'm pissed though, cause the World Civilization is only about the white hemisphere of the world. I thought world would imply all of the world, not just Europe and North America, guess not.

1. i've had weird cravings all week. This week i have actually broke down and bought some ODoul's (non-alcoholic beer, if you don't live in the US). i was just craving beer in the worst way. This is odd for me-i officially 'quit drinking' on Feb. 19, 1990, and i don't generally get cravings. i do sometimes have some olfactory hallucinations (where i'll just be sitting around and suddenly smelling Southern Comfort with sweet tea, out of nowhere). At the moment some pierogis are thawing in the kitchen because i just HAD to have some.

2. i'm really tired. My whole body has been giving me grief this week-cramps, charleyhorses, spasms, etc. Just random pain.

3. i love languages. The other day i translated our 'abuse and neglect' policy into Spanish for the benefit of some of our staff who don't speak or read English very well. (It's now the 'insultos, abandono y maltratar' page.) i was real proud of myself for having very few errors on it. i don't speak any languages besides English (and i don't speak English very well either) but i can read and write almost proficiently in Spanish, and somewhat in several other languages. Seems like all my real proficiency is in reading/writing, no matter what language it is-even English is a struggle sometimes for me to speak.

4. Just for the hoo rah of it, here's a bonus fact: hemispheric dominance (speaking of brains) is generally the opposite to your dominant hand-ie, a left handed person is right-brain dominant. However, i am both right-handed and right-brained. (There is a pretty easy test to discover the dominant hemisphere of your brain.) i understand that a lot of people with ADHD are right-brain dominant regardless of which hand is dominant. It probably accounts for some of my generalised confusion and also my LD in math.

1. It's 125AM. i have to be at work at 2AM for a nurses meeting. i don't like doing this. i could write fifteen pages on work ethic and work practices tonight, but i will spare you. Let's just say that in most places, the nurses who work 11-7 (and i was always an 11-7 nurse) had their meetings at 7AM.

2. i wish i could just be a housewife. Not that i don't enjoy work (my current job circumstances excepted) but i am more tired of feeling like i ought to be apologising or guilty because my priority is my home life and my husband. i am tired of working with women who put in 60 hours a week simply because they don't want to go home to whatever rotten situation they have there. And expect me to put in 60 hours a week, too. i am tired of being picked on because i get googly over my husband and we've been married eleven years. i am tired of feeling like there's something wrong with me because he's my first priority, and sick of hearing women meow at me because i'm not some dominating She Ra who runs the household.

3. i'm really glad i don't have to work on Friday, but we will be very busy with the Monster House around here. It will be very nice when it's done and we can do something on a weekend besides build, clean, rearrange and paint.

2. my 16 year-old brother just left for a prayer vigil for a friend of his that was killed in a drunk driving accident. i didn't know him, but i'm just thinking..about how horrible it would be if someone i knew died..  i really don't appreciate life enough sometimes..

3. a couple friends kidnapped me last night, and we walked all around town for 4 hours. it was really nice..random and unexpected.

1. i have some vague, nameless anxiety tonight that is preventing me from sleeping. It's job-related. i decided to go back on some medication for a while to see if that helps it.

2. Since we(i) redid the floor in the new bedroom to lino tile, the dog is having a hard time jumping on the bed. She has a steel pin in one of her hind legs (when we got her, the leg was broken and she needed the pin to repair it) and so, even though it doesn't give her any trouble, it's 2" shorter than the other, and i feel sorry for her, so i've been lifting her up to put her on the bed. We really have to get an area rug so she can do it herself.

3. i recently found my favourite cartoon of all time on DVD. The Japanese original is called Gatchaman, and in its first release in the US it was a pretty heavily edited (for violence) version called Battle of the Planets. It was eventually pulled and later re-released in a new, edited-and-sanitised-to-the-point-of-non-recognition version called G Force. The nice thing about these DVDs is that they have all three versions of the same episodes, so you can see how heavily they were cut. Who says we don't have censorship here?

1. We chanced getting into the nest boxes and counted the kits today (born just before or during our 4th of July holiday trip). Godiva had five, three surviving. Cadbury (Divey's mother) had eight--EIGHT. That doubles her usual litter. One was dead, and two were very weak, so she has five healthy kits. We buried the dead ones in the rough area of the yard. (Divey and Caddie are rabbits, if you're wondering).

2. MY PANTS CAME HOME! (A Nness project that has taken a year but worth it, and this topic was born as an exercise for the participants of that LMAO). They look great! Even better, this week's monthly women's meeting for my church is on art (with many of us displaying), and I have the GREATEST pair of pants to wear to it.

3. I took third for my age category in the Independence Day 2-mile run. :^ ) (They call it the Melba QRU Fun Run...but it really isn't that fun to run two miles on 37-year-old knees in the summer with no shade anywhere).

1. I might be getting a new home 'puter soon. I'll be replacing a 300 megahertz Pentium II with a Pentium III 800 or 900 megahertz system. Eventually, I can get a flat panel monitor and use my other machine for Unix or as server space...
2. We're getting this machine from my boyfriend's uncle who bought it, used it for a month, then went to a Pentium IV, and he's only asking $100.
3. It has a built in burner (I currently have an Iomega external Zip CD) which means that I can read CDs once I have burned them! And it has a floppy drive that works (mine burned out almost 2 years ago)
(and, because I am so excited here is one more thrown in)
4. I'll be able to start my computer and begin using it within 5 minutes (no blue screen to screw me up or restarts)!!! I'll be able to work on my website, and edit pictures and video from my mini-DV camera (Eventually, I have to get firewire). I'll be able to play games that I have bought and not been able to use, like Tropico, Survivor and the Sims Online. I'll be able to finally let myself buy CSI:The Game and play it as much as I want! And all of the software I currently have will work on the new machine... WOO HOO!!!!

5. If you couldn't tell, I am really excited.. and I don't know when we're getting it, I just know that we're giving him the money tomorrow!

3. When I lived in the dorm, we liked the food at the cafeteria, but hated eating there because it was smelly and uncomfortable. We devised an ingenious system of smuggling very large amounts of food out and then we would take them back up to our dorm room and throw "banquets" for everyone on our hall. Good times.

1 - I am so behind on all of my nness projects. This has been the worst summer, symptomatically speaking, that I have ever had and it had sucked all creative urge and ability out of me. It is terrible that artmaking, which used to be so pleasurable for me, has become onerous and stressful.

2 - I had a really good day today though. Saw the new Charlie's Angels movie and did some fun shopping. Apparantly it was my day, because I found a Microsoft Natural Keyboard marked down from 35 to 21 dollars and two Polaroid cameras in great working order - a 600 and a Spectra!

1. Just returned from Stephen D'Arc's memorial service, where the following comment by the Bishop John Stott struck me: "Finding a new Sunday School teacher will be easy. The difficult thing is to find a new friend." He's lying about the Sunday School teacher. Well, half-lying. The process is simple. But nobody can adequately replace Bro. D'Arc--a brilliant mind, well-read, broadly educated (formally and informally), culturally and historically aware, a scientist and artist (woodturning, painting, calligraphy, photography, metalwork and jewelry, among other things), an incredible wit, and an intense fascination with it all. There was no casket, as Steven offered himself first to surgical miracles and second to scientific inquiry. Typical.

2. Learned at the funeral that a good friend is moving to Seattle (well, Bothell)--leaves for a trip to Italy Wednesday, home Aug 2, and will be moving Aug 3 as her husband starts work there Aug 4. At least it's not overseas--we were afraid that's what it would come to...

1. My boyfriend just told me that he has exactly 75$ in his wallet at this very moment.

2. Today was a very bad day untill I went off on somebody about an hour ago, now I feel better http://nervousness.org/forum/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Don't ask me why, but it helped a whole ton!

3. One of my neices name is Aireanna, which really reminds me of  the mermaid girl in "The Little Mermaid". Aireanna just turned 4 months old 2 days ago. Aunt Lizzy loves you!!

1. Houses with no books in them scare me to death. It now occurs to me, someone once said a room without books is like a body without a soul; just think of the implications, based on stories about people without souls...

2. A few years ago I was asked by a 20-year-old (or so) young woman "how do you have the patience to read a whole book like that? I could never do that." This floored me, and left me gasping. L'esprit de l'escalier later told me the answer was "It's a question of finding the patience to get through everything else so I can get back to my book."

3. I am currently rereading The Once and Future King for the first time since I was twelve or thereabouts.

Houses without books are buildings, but they are not homes! And I am also reading "The Once and Future King" only its my first time...

1. I've got the house to myself until thursday, and I can't say I'm sad... I've got lots of time to do all the things I normally don't do.

2. I'm dogsitting my neighbor's neighbor and though this dog is a chocolate lab she is much more rambuncious than our black lab (she's 10 months, ours is 6 months) and I like her, but she jumps too much.

3. I got to spend Sunday with my best friend, whose going back to Germany with her hubby on the 26th. Though we only spent a few days together, I'm going to miss her terribly...It was good to finally talk about all the things I never could talk to her about before, including when I had been sick...

lol, bugitha ~ I do that too, all the time.

1. My vacation to Seattle rocked! I had lots of fun and spent way too much money. The trip was nicknamed "The Succinct Flatulence Tour" which came about after a few nights of drunken rambling conversations.

2. I find old, abandoned barns to be quite regal and beautiful.

3. I am quite happy to discover that Chris and I travel well together. I think that when couples that can travel together without wanting to strangle each other, it really says something about the relationship.

1. I love the word "bunnyhug", and the fact that it is peculiar to the dialect spoken only in Saskatchewan.

2. Today I went and raided a beautiful costume collection for 60's gear to wear in a parade next weekend.

3. I am missing everything I love about my hometown in summer. Especially the Fringe Festival. It seems it's hard to live down a really good summer the next year...

1. I am currently reading Harry Potter V, but only when my students are at school and I can steal it.

2. My unbaked cookies are way too sticky. Fortunately, people don't seem to mind too much. Still, it's really annoying me that I seem to have lost my touch. It seems not making things for a few years can really dull my ability to do it right.

3. Unbaked cookies seem to have the most names of any food in existance: fiddle-diddles, macaroons, shit cookies, etc. For the record, I'm talking about the things where you boil up sugar and milk, add cocoa and oatmeal and raisins, and plop the stuff on wax paper where it's SUPPOSED to harden. Maybe I need to boil it a bit longer next time...

1. I started reading book of Job today, for a paper I have to write for school.

2. Up until Jr. High I really loved reading the bible, but then I was transfered to a semi-religious Jr. High that managed to turn both me and my brother off anything related to Judaism.

3. My copy of the bible is filled with Bad Religion quotes and circled A's.

*** I really should do some biblical studies and read the book. After all, the bible has had a greater influence on Western culture than the Homeric epics, Don Quixote and the new testament altogether. Shame on me. No, shame on the education system that taught me to hate it.

2. When I was in 7th grade, I knew the properties of all the subatomic particles that were known at that time. (By the time I was studing particle physics in college, I had forgotten most of it.)

3. When I was in 7th grade, the school cafeteria produced milkshakes that were so thick and congealed that you could plop them upside down out of the cup and they would just sit on the table without changing shape.

1. when i was four years old i announced i was going to be an archaeologist. Despite this, i went to school (the first time) for graphic design and then dropped out after eighteen months. It took me five years from then to go back to school, this time for nursing, and then went back a second time to get my RN. Despite all this, if i ever finish out my bachelors' degree, it will be in geology. Maybe i should have just listened to me when i was four.

2. i am getting very anxious waiting to hear about this job interview i went to yesterday.

2. The back of my legs are sticking to this wooden chair and I will have painful indentions when I stand up.

3. I'm a whimp when it comes to confrontation. I avoided it twice today. Once was that I couldn't tell a professor from another school that was borrowing our facilities (without permission) that he and his students should leave. The other time was when I couldn't bring myself to disagree verbally with my co-worker's statement that the Bible says that people who commit suicide are going to hell.
