Awww...but you forget Lilac-I work with all men. I have for 3 years. My skills have been fine tuned.
I am actually a very laid-back person, and when people mess with me...I take it well.
Perhaps that is why I've lasted so long at my current job. They mess with me all the time, play tricks on me, and tease me. But I can take it and toss it back.
I'm very laid back myself.
Must run in the family.

Tomorrow I am going to take Gwen to school and them come home and sleep all morning.
Half.com announced that they will not close down on July 13, but stay open until Oct. 14 so that people can shop during the back to school season. :yay:
I have yet to set up an auction on ebay. I have two things all cleaned, photographed, packed, weighed and ready to be listed. But I want to start the auction on a week night so that it will end on a week night and I am always too busy/tired on week nights! Maybe tomorrow.
I got a haircut today and so far I don't like it. I'll see what I can do with it in the morning and then decide if I hate it or not. Maybe I will do metallic blue, Larrissa.
I am very very happy about pantiesontherod's great news.
I couldn't send a message tonight because my mailbox was full.

I was wondering the same thing... I was online really early this morning, expecting some sort of celebration. :birthday:
But for some reason the "Chat" link wouldn't work for me, and I didn't see any posts about the anniversary. I ended up thinking I must have imagined that the 16th is N'ness B-day.

replevin is the recovery of specific personal property.
It sounds more like a new designer drug they'd advertize in magazines with two pages of fine print following a completely uninformative ad like "Isn't it time you asked your doctor about Replevin?"
I wonder if Theresa is also forced to learn definitions of things like flemesflit, grithbrice, infangentheor, and (my personal favorite) flymenafyrmth?
I think jargon that's conserved with precise meanings over 1300 (or more) years is fun.

 All those med ads make me crazy, especially the one for the viagra-type drug, where the woman is talking about how "her man" uses whatever it is, and she's saying things like "It works fast! I mean FAST!" It's almost porn.
Now I am curious about pantiesontherod's news. I'll have to go find out what it is.
I agreed to read a friend's husband's self-published thriller and critique it for him. Bad idea!

The med ads that most get to me (mostly I see them on the subway or suchlike places, since I don't read magazines much) are the ones that don't even mention what the pill in question is supposedly for. They show a picture of flowers, or a woman jumping for joy, show a picture of a pill (gee, thanks), give an uninformative slogan like the one I gave, and the name of the pill. The utterly disgusting thing is that these ads seem to work. People do as their doctor about them. Then their doctor asks them the right questions, and they say (just as with a randomly chosen horoscope) "gosh, doctor, that's exactly it!" and get prescribed the pill. And you wonder why your health insurance premiums go up every month. [/rant]
If I had lots of money I'd conduct a sociology experiment: buy a few very expensive ad pages in a major magazine, and advertise a fake pill. The main ad copy would be completely uninformative. The fine print would say as clearly as possible: "This is a hoax, it is meant to cull the uninformed and gullible. If you do not wish to be seen as an easy mark, don't ask your doctor about this." Then I'd ask doctors to report how many people asked to be put on the pill.
I made myself a random stir-fry sort of thing tonight for the first time in quite a while. It worked well, but needed a different wine.

Though I get newsletters both from my university alumni association and from my major department (History), and though I still live near my university, it was something like half a year before I heard of the death of my favorite professor there.
I will always find it hard to believe he's dead.
I still haven't read any of his books, though one of them is well known within the discipline. He never assigned them; not his way.

I am selectively laid back. Sometimes I am extremely high-strung. An ex once compared me to Sally from When Harry Met Sally. And I hate to be teased BTW.
I spent the evening "cleaning up" my hubby's website. The guy who originally did it had no clue about Drag Racing and all that goes with it, so since I am now the webmaster I changed most of the logo's and created links.
You can check it out if you want to DragTrans.com (http://dragtrans.com) the other one is RaceTrans.com (http://racetrans.com) but it doesn't have as much "stuff" to do on it.
"Isn't it time you asked your doctor about Replevin?"
I heard a comedian telling a joke about hearing an ad like that and remembering the name of the drug for the next time he went to the doctor. So he goes in for something random and as the Doctor is showing him out of the exam room into the waiting room he remembers and says "I forgot to ask you about Replevin." And the doctor loudly replies "You have Anal warts?"

omg...the replevin jokes have me giggling.
Hammerquill knows lots of legal English. Google couldn't tell me what any of it meant.
quick, Hammerquill, post some definitions.
hammerquill
06-17-2004, 12:48 AM
:o
What makes you think I know the definitions?
Those are terms I came up with when reading Anglo-Saxon charters and laws. Since we were only studying them in general terms (this is undergrad medieval history), the meaning of most of them (especially weird ones like these) was rather unimportant.
I asked my teacher (the one who died and whose death I heard about much much later) what flymenafyrmth meant - it's my favorite for its patent absurdity in spelling and pronunciation, not whatever it happens to mean. He wasn't sure about the definition, but said to check... not the OED - too long out of date; not an Anglo-Saxon dictionary - too specialized. No, Black's Law Dictionary. Current edition. Because somewhere in England it might still be important to know some of the terminology of ninth- or tenth-century charters, because some terms of those charters may still be in force. Therefore Black's will still list them. At least some of them. This is why the historians deemed it unnecessary to footnote such bizarrities. I did look it up, once (and may even have looked up some of the others), but I no longer recall the details.
The English love this about their legal system. I have to admit, so do I.
{Edited because I still can't spell "flymenafyrmth." :P}

ok, i have to say i'm cheesed off about the division of labor in my house right now. the one where i get to cook, put away food, and wash dishes. wtf. the response i got was, 'but i'm so tired when i get home from work. and i did housework on the weekend.' i'm not feeling that as a reply. even though i'm posting here, i'm not doing nothing during the day. i guess i'd better buy some ramen noodles and some chef mr. boyardee. where's my zen?

I got up ridiculously early (for me).

~ Hello everyone! I just realized I have been parked in 3RF for a few hours now! I logged on and then had a meeting and then was talking to a coworker for quite a while.
~ I'm having one hell of a horrible day. I was supposed to be taking a vacation day today to bake some stuff with my sister for father's day but one of my coworkers who does the same job as me didn't show up so now I HAVE TO be here since my other coworker has to leave early today because he is in a band and they have a show to do today. <_<
~ At our meeting the boss went over results of a survey that we all filled out online, annonymously, and I was one of the people who marked "very unsatisfied" for many of the questions. Well, the boss was clearly bothered by this because I guess he was totally oblivious to the fact that he SUCKS and this place sucks so he said "I don't understand why all of these people who are unhappy are here. If you aren't happy with the job then why not leave? WHy keep working here?" Ok, so my boss would rather have me quit than show concern as to why I am unhappy? Great. Just another reason to despise my life. I really would like to quit right now. I was THIS CLOSE to walking out in that meeting since he obviously doesn't care if I'm working here.
siafu
06-17-2004, 10:08 AM
aw sarahkate, that sucks. i'm sorry. it's definitely worse than doing too many dishes. at least i can switch to paper. it sounds like your boss might be taking the survey a skosh too personally. they were seeking feedback, right? people are allowed to be unsatisfied and still try to do their best.
i'm sorry you don't get to bake today.
you definitely still rock and we're still rooting for you!!!! :thewave:

06-17-2004, 10:34 AM
~ Aww thanks gals. *throws deodorant at Larrissa* (Hey, I don't use it, I'm stinky remember?! :P)
~ I am really putting some serious consideration into quitting. Staying here just feels like I'm selling myself short. Not that my job totally sucks, but still...
~ Oooh I don't know. I'm a horrible decision maker.

What is Madonna changing her name to?
I was listening to the 9/11 hearings on NPR this morning. It brought the whole thing back more than watching it over and over on TV ever did. Ugh.

06-17-2004, 11:04 AM
~ Esther?! That's ridiculous.
~ When my family first moved to NY, I was about 6 years old, and there was an old woman in our neighborhood named Esther. I called her "Esther Pester" because she annoyed me. She used to always yell at the kids in the neighborhood for being too loud or walking on her lawn. Crotchety old woman!
~ I think I will just have to tough it out at my job. for now, as sucky as it is. I really need lots of dental work done so I really should go to a dentist soon, might as well get something out of this damn company. It's also possible that they might reimburse my tuition when I go back to school in the Fall, so that's another incentive to stay I guess.

I'm in a foul mood today, and I don't know why. Everything, just everything is annoying me!
I don't want to be here at work...but I don't want to be at home either...I think I'm feeling maybe a little overwhelmed by life in general.
Too much stuff to do, things to get done...people I need to talk with, things that need fixing, child that needs attention, animals that need care...
I feel as if I'm having a personl, private panic attack!

Plus...I'm dreading that stupid vacation I planned on going on with my Mom...the one to Myrtle Beach. I just DO NOT want to go. I've been thinking about that a lot today. I want to spend time with my mother...but now I hear that my 2 aunts, my uncle and cousin are all going too. I want to pull my hair out! I just can not be stuck in a beach house with all those people!!! I'll go insane! I like my family and everything...but I can't be cooped up with these people for a week!
I hyperventilate just thinking about it.
I don't want to be in Myrtle Beach in the first place. I definatley don't want to be in Mytrle Beach with extended family smothering every iota of my personal space!

I should be cleaning my house and taking a shower for we are having his friends over for dinner.

But then maybe I would get all shy because it would be like talking to that boy you really like and hoping to god you don't say anything stupid and so it ends up being awkward and you don't say anything of any substance even though there is SO much you want to talk about.
So maybe this is better...I just feel left out.

I think if the dealership is going to keep your car for longer than necessary to do warranty repairs and graciously offer to put you into a rental car, the rental car should be comparable to the car they are holding hostage.
I feel like a little grey/gray mouse driving down the road.

Siafu/Theresa should play her scrabble word before Curlita gets impatient.
Sometimes I am pretty sure I know a Nervousers real name, but when I am in the middle of typing a non-random fact, I don't want to exit to the main page to check. So, I believe it is Erica who will be impatient and that she went to U of A, but I wouldn't bet my life on it.
My one-eyed monkey is going to be my first Naked Mail to send. I've narrowed it down and am tossing a coin to decide who I am mailing it to....maybe I shouldn't have mentioned the one-eyed thing and just let them think it got lost in the mail.

these are easy and yummy as heck!
Skor bar squares
Ingredients:
·Ritz crackers (1 small box)
·1 can of sweetened condensed milk
·1 bag of skor bar chipits
·1 container of vanilla [betty crocker] whipped frosting
Method:
Crush crackers. Put 'em into a medium sized bowl and add the milk and half a bag of chipits. Put the mixture in a baking dish(it says nine inche square but the one I used was rectangular, so screw that). Yeah, then flatten teh "mixture" down. Bake it for 15-20 minutes (on 325 degrees) or until brown. Let the sucker cool down before putting on the frosting. then put on the rest of the chipits.
and according to what i wrote down, this should serve about 8 billion.. ;)
heres some pictures, just to make sure you're doing it right.. i guess?
actually i thought it would be fun ;)

Madonna is changing her name to Esther, evidently.
I've been on tenterhooks ever since this was mentioned, waiting to know what the name would be.
I was kinda hoping she'd change it to Prince.
I hope she doesn't go back to the mundane world of the doubly-named... Just "Esther" on those album covers. "Tickets for Esther go on sale today" "Esther's die-hard fans..."

Actually "Chillicothe" (CHILL-uh-COTH-ee) is a bastardized Anglicization of the Shawnee word chow-a-gotha, which is generic term for "big town" or "meeting place."
There are other Chillicothes in the U.S. but Ohio's is the oldest... "frontier" town of white incursion into North America, from back when Wild West was Appalachian Mountains and Great Black Swamp.
Chillicothe is near the birthplace of a Shawnee who tried unsuccessfully to unite different Native Americans against expansion of nascent U.S.
Now his life story is an "outdoor drama" performed by white actors wearing dark makeup & black wigs.

-yesterday I found out bluebells are blue because of the soil PH, if its acidic they actually turn pink, which is why sometimes you get pink bluebells there not a seperate species there the same just a different soil PH. if you put them in vinegar they will also change (um...but I wouldn't advise it tisn't nice for the flowers *looks over at Larrissa and that ominous bottle of vinegar she has in her hand after reading this*).
-Im going to watch 13th Warrior tonite (sticks to her viking theme for the posts today) and possibly with half the population of the student halls.

1: julian pitched a fit at the mall yesterday too, while we were in the city, post appts....
2: when he was very little, i told him if he pitched a fit at the store we'd leave... i had to abandon a cart of groceries once and leave a cart of stuff at walmart once, maybe twice, but it cured him of the public scenes....
3: but he's become quite the rotten boy the past month... i am trying to figure out if it is because h'es been COOPED UP inside, almost EVERY day because of the cold and rain, or if it is because he knows i am having a baby... he was incredible when i was pg with harrison, and very mature about everything and interested.... he seems to be about this one (he kisses my belly and tells me he loves "ROSIE" all the time) but who knows what is going on....
4: it's making me lose my mind... and temper...<_< poor boy.... so i am going overboard with his birthday party to make up for being a bad mommy lately..... he even got to pick his theme (spongebob... blech) and i didn't try to talk him out of it, just to make him happy....

nymphette is the farthest thing from a bad mommy.... we ALL lose our tempers with our children and I cannot even begin to imagine what you are going through with Harrison and being pregnant and having very little support... <ahem>
I think the Sponge Bob party will be wonderful! Julian loves you very much and he knows you love him too.
I did not burn my finger in a fire... <_< Brat. I hit the top of my finger on the burner/broiler thing in the toaster oven and it like melted the skin. It was disgusting. You could literally SMELL the burnt skin.

2: this place is therapeutic.... *
3: supper is in the oven.... i have a couple batches of casseroles in my freezers.. i decided to at least two nights a week, make up a few dishes and freeze them.. it's going to be (well, in theory.. this spring has been sucky so far!!!) too hot to be cooking at 4-5 in the afternoon, so i'll spend evenings/nights making suppers up so they only have to be reheated for half an hour or so.... that and when i am pregnant, i am lazy and don't feel like cooking.... i think i've mentioned that a time or two though.... and it isn't fair to pawn off kraft diner or corn dogs or weiners and beans on julian more than once a week or so.....

Why is it that parents always want to do things so God-awful early in the morning? What's wrong with, like noon?
Lilac my folks are the opposite. When i went to visit them in January, after 50+ hours on the bus, i caught a cab from the bus depot to their house and arrived a little after 11:30 am. It was a freaking cold day, and i was in a dress and a non winter jacket. (coming from GA i didn't have a bulky one). The door was locked so i rang the bell. Nothing. i knocked. Nothing. Finally, i went around to the side of the house and began shouting as loud as i could.....hey you people, i'm here and i'm cold, open the door!!! That got them up. It also broght all the neighbors within earshot to their windows. My parents aren't normal.
My back is still unbelievably sore. i can't see a doc....no insurance. i'm cranky.
On a positive note.....i just finished making myself an ultra cool foot stool for under my computer desk. It's made from 2 phone books, and is covered in duct tape. i think Gwensmom supplied that idea in a post a long while back. Thanks Sarah....i love it! :)

1. On becoming Canadian, I recommend "How To Be Canadian" by Ian and Will Ferguson. It also won't answer most of your questions, but as a Canadian, I thought it was pretty funny, and an itegral part of becoming a Canadian is acquiring an appreciation for Canadian humour.
2. Another essential part is learning to put the "u" in humour... and colour... and stuff like that.
3. I have been reading "Utne (http://www.utne.com)" magazine for the last couple weeks. I think many people here would really appreciate it.

It doesn't help me one bit either.
I should have chosen Crabbypants as my 'ness name as that is my general mood most of the time.

"People normally line up or queue according to the principle of "first-come, first-served." They will be angry if you push ahead in a line-up instead of waiting your turn. " NO! i never would have guessed.
"You should always arrive on time -- at school, at work and for any meeting. People who are often late may be fired from their jobs or suspended from school. Many Canadians will not wait more than 10 or 15 minutes for someone who has a business meeting. For social events, people expect that you will arrive within half an hour of the stated time. " heehee i find that funny too.
"Canadians respect the natural environment and expect people to avoid littering (dropping waste paper and other garbage on the street or throwing it out of your car). They will expect you to carry your garbage until you can find a proper garbage can." whoohoo! no litter!

Skilyne/Erica! How are you feeling? I don't remember reading an update after your icky spell.
I'm happy that this is the end of my work week!
I like mushrooms as long as they are cooked. My husband likes them raw, but they are too squishy and spongy that way. I also like all kinds of moldy cheese. Mmmmmm, fungus!

I see Julie, too! Hi Julie! How is the baby doing? Do you have a name picked out yet?
Cindy, Johnny Rockets is a 50s-style diner that I'm addicted to. They have sloppy burgers and onion rings and you can get flavored cokes. I'm a huge fan of chocolate cokes.
We didn't end up going the other night. I'm still gaining weight at a rapid pace, so we went for a walk instead. Simple things like walking are getting harder, but I need to keep doing it. As a bonus, I slept really well last night.

From reading Larrissa's excerpts, I'm starting to think that I belong in Canada.
Often, my three random facts become something more akin to "three random paragraphs."
I hope that no one is bothered by this.

I have a rash of chigger bites across my lower back above my waistline - I've had it off and on (mostly on) since it's been warm - April? I finally decided I'm not sitting on the cushioned swing at my mom's anymore
I decided I better not scratch them anymore - it kind of looks like I'm scratching my butt. <_<

Gee. I love learning new languages, but Canadian looks hard. No wonder a lot of the Québécois want to split off and just speak French.
I need to go buy hazelnuts.

I'm having difficulty with the word "Né()û“µi‡T". If Eve were online I'd ask her, but since she's not, maybe another Canadian can enlighten me. Does the doubled change the pronunciation at all? and is the ‡ long or short? :P
Yesterday (starting from midnight) I made a plum galette, slept, installed drywall, worked on brass vases and wallpieces, and went to the symphony.
My mother was performing with the Oakland Symphony Chorus, along with the Berkeley Symphony.
She joined this season (after not having sung in public for almost twenty years) just to get a chance to perform with Berkeley's Maestro Nagano.

Evidence that hammerquill is a Renaissance man, Exhibit A.
Just found out that one of my favorite obscure singers is going to be in Seattle in nine days!
It is too early to be thinking this seriously about lunch after a breakfast as big as the one I had. Nonetheless, I am.

I know I'll never convince anyone I didn't bribe Curlita to say that, so maybe I'd better just pay up.

I keep coming up with great fictions when trying to think of facts, and vice versa. And I usually forget either way before I switch over to the other thread. Perhaps I should have Replying pages open for each thread on different tabs...
