1. Sharky's Christmas gift wish got me thinking about how badly I acted at Christmas 5 years ago, pre-engagement. Rob & I were living together, and had been for 8 months. I was secretly hoping for an engagement ring for Christmas, but my friends and I had been harassing Rob & telling him that you don't propose on a major holiday & expect that to be the only gift! :P (we were young and stupid!) Christmas morning came, and even though I knew we'd scared him out of proposing on Christmas, I was still hoping. He gave me a really pretty white gold bracelet, which I love. But I was disappointed. And as the day went on, I started thinking he'd never propose, which made me mad! We went to his parent's house that afternoon, and I remember showing his sister the bracelet and saying "at least he's getting closer to having something on my finger." She just looked at me in shock. We later went to visit some friends, and I had a couple of drinks. I started ranting about how Rob was "throwing rings around" before he met me (he was married before, and had been engaged once before that). Basically I acted like a spoiled child. I was embarassing myself, but I couldn't stop. It's amazing he ever did propose (which he did, two days later, on our 2 year anniversary -- I didn't even think about that when I got so mad on Christmas day!) Our friends still tease me about the "throwing rings around" thing....

2. I don't think I've ever acted as badly as I did in the above-story....

3. I wonder if sometimes I share too much here....

1. I now have visions of a naked Santa ....

2. When I was a kid, we weren't allowed to say "shut up," "butt," or "sucks." I never questioned it either.

3. I've always vowed that I will never say my mother's favorite mad-phrase "I'm so mad I can't see straight." So far I've kept that promise.

Oh my, makes you wonder about the nekkid Santa that showed up at his/her house last Christmas!

1. I made a scene about not being engaged last year, but not on Christmas, and only to Chris himself.

2. I am quite sure we won't be getting engaged this Christmas because Chris keeps saying how annoyed he is by the plans for my brother's wedding, which will be this coming March.

3. My alternative Christmas present hope is an iPod, but I am not convinced I am getting that, either.

1. It's been fascinating to watch how "sucks" has softened in people's perceptions. When I was a teen in the 70s, it was considered totally vulgar, like "fuck" and everyone understood the reference. Nowdays, it seems to carry little more force for most people than "bummer".

2. I'm cueing up Beethoven for Cuilanië

3. I need to buy new shoes. And some more long-sleeved shirts. Most of my clothes are summer things - a reflection of my perceptions of reality, I suppose.

2. Girl_who_loves_sharks wrote a great sentence about Kafka on chain game overkill but removed it because she crashed with me -- she should put it back!!! There can be two entries, I think for stuff...

3. I think someone could make a lot of money analyzing chain game mania and creating 12 step programs to get us to turn off our computers! ;)

1. I decided not to put up a Christmas tree this year because I had already put up and decorated two trees for work and felt like I was running out of time. Brian never helps put up the tree because he could care less about holidays.

2. I came home last night and Brian was putting up the tree "Because I thought it would make you happy"

1. Legislation was passed last week that the word "fuck" would be allowed on the airways now as long as it didn't refer to sex...it all came about from Bono saying "fuck" on the music awards show

2. One of my students made their Christmas wish list yesterday and had the following wishes:
All I want for Christmas is for my mom and dad to be together and my grades to get better.

3. I'm going Christmas shopping this weekend for a brother/sister here at school and I keep obsessing about what to get so that I get the most for my $150.00 which actually isn't a lot when you're buying for 2 kids in middle school

2. i haven't put up a tree since i moved to this house 4 years ago.

3. i'm getting scrooge-ier by the moment: "i have no more red and green construction paper, i don't have yarn because you forgot to return it last time you borrowed it, i don't have any other colors of glitter, i have no pipecleaners left, there is only black felt now, that's the smallest size wiggly eyes i have." christmas comes around every year, people...please don't attack your art teacher because you forgot it once again.

1. Remember I was having a bah-humbug day yesterday. Shortest way I can put this: a few years ago we agreed year one my mom would have day after thanksgiving and christmas day, brian's mom would have thanksgiving and christmas eve. year two we would switch. This year my mom was to have T-Day and Brian's mom was to have C-Day. My mom announced she would be out of town T-day so I gave B's mom T-day (uh, was I supposed to just sit home). So, my mom believes she should have C-day now. My dad (parents are divorced, mom is remarried, but they are all friendly) called yesterday "uh, aren't we doing Christmas at your in-laws" "yeah" "what time" "2" "Your mom just called and invited me to Christmas dinner at 2 Christmas day." It's a shame I'm not the type of girl to call my mother foul names, I really needed to.

2. So, Medeous, after a frustrating day Brian's attempt to bring me Christmas cheer when I know he could care less about it were frustrated happy tears.

3. I can't believe my mother some days.

I echo that sentiment Rustell, but want to add that I don't believe my mother most days.

1. My mother got mad at me yesterday for saying I couldn't come down because I didn't feel well, but I would definitely come down on the 23rd. She told me (she wouldn't get on the phone so she was talking through or over my 14 year old brother) that I could just return all their christmas presents. When my brother was going to hang up she yelled, "You're grandma went to the hospital for chest pains."

2. She called later to let me know that she was kidding about returning the presents.

3. I am debating on taking a nap at my desk... :-)

1. I echo all the mother sentiments. I see my mom almost every Sunday, except around the holidays when everything is so hectic. At Thanksgiving she told my aunt that she hardly ever sees us, and all I can do is look at her with my best "What the hell?" face. Every Sunday equals hardly ever?? Not in my book....

2. I'm feeling especially lazy this afternoon....

3. I'm stumped as to who Rustell's SB, TS and JG are.... It's probably one of those things that's going to bother me until I find out....or figure it out myself... :P

1. My mom was supposed to take me to the post office this morning, becuase I can't really afford to pay for postage myself. mean- I have the money, but it shouldn't be going for postage. But she flaked on me and went to work without taking me to the PO ( I was asleep, she should have woken me.) I was pretty certain she'd been trying to shrug it off since I asked. She's very passive-agressive, and it drives me MAD.

2. So now I'm going to take the bust to the post office, probably going to pay with change from my piggy bank, and I figured that while I was spending money, I may as well buy some apple juice. No matter how many times I ask- no one keeps the frige stocked with juice simply becuase everyone but me drinks milk.

3. *sigh* I am being driven mad by my family taking care of themselves, and not one of them realizing how much I am struggling just to keep my head up.

The ardor of arboreality is an adventure we have spurned, we've spurned
A new leaf overturned
It's a new leaf overturned

And so I'm going down to Cowtown
The cow's a friend to me
Lives beneath the ocean and that's where I will be
Beneath the waves, the waves
And that's where I will be
I'm gonna see the cow beneath the sea

We yearn to swim for home, but our only home is bone
How sleepless is the egg knowing that which throws the stone
Foresees the bone, the bone
Our only home is bone
Our only home is bone

And so I'm going down to Cowtown
The cow's a friend to me
Lives beneath the ocean and that's where I will be
Beneath the waves, the waves
And that's where I will be
I'm gonna see the cow beneath the sea

Yes I'm going down to Cowtown
The cow's a friend to me
Lives beneath the ocean and that's where I will be
Beneath the waves, the waves
And that's where I will be
I'm gonna see the cow beneath the sea
Yes I'm gonna see (I'm gonna see)
The cow (the cow)
Beneath the sea

In honor of Girl-who-loves-sharks birthday, its an all Sharky post:

. If my mother missed my birthday, I would cry

My mother did miss my birthday, once. And I did cry.

1. It may not surprise Sharky to know that I used to tell time based on what program was on television.

2. I read Sharky's Best American Poetry poem, which she said I could quickly absorb because it was short. Hmm. It may be short, but I'm still absorbing. :)

3.Happy Birthday!

1. I think your cow song is much better than "I'm going to corntown."

2. I haven't checked the mail yet today. I'm doing that thing where I try to act like a normal person to whom checking the mail isn't big deal.

3. I'm afraid it may snow today...I keep waiting for it. The snow we had finally all melted away. Stupid winter...

ps. Happy B-Day GWLS!

2. I need to get more They Might Be Giants. All I have is a mix tape someone made me in high school.

3. I saw They Might Be Giants for free :) They played with the Violent Femmes. That was a good day.

anyone like to contest any of these random facts?
1. I will.

2. A jiffy is not always .01 seconds; it's often defined - and I first learned it - as the unit of interrupt timing a on given computer. For instance, on the Commodore 64 and many others, it was 1/60 sec - and this number was used in other places, too, it being the cycle period of AC current in the US and some other places. In some places it's 1/50 sec. Some people also use it to refer to the length of time it takes light to travel 1cm, or 1m, or 1ft in a vacuum, which are lengths of time many orders of magnitude shorter. Some places it's .001 seconds.

3. I also suspect that at some point in history or prehistory a war lasted less than a minute, when a king or champion was immediately killed as soon as it started; but it's probably not recorded.

I woke up & got ready for work this morning, went outside, shoveled, started my car, shoveled some more, tried to get the snow off my car & finally noticed that one of my windshield wipers is broken. My boyfriend just replaced my wipers yesterday so I think he didn't put them on tight enough, I couldn't fix it & thought it would be too dangerous to drive to work in the blowing snow with no windshield wipers so I called in!

2. I feel guilty for calling in (even though I had a valid reason) but I love staying home too! I love it especially because I get to eat weird things for breakfast that I don't get to at work, like an onion bagel with melted cheese, and .....ketchup! Yum!

3. Some kid (well, a "guy" around my age) came to my door a while ago & asked if I wanted my front sidewalk shoveled. I said "no thanks" and gave a lame excuse why. Now I feel really bad for turning him away. He probably needed the money, and I could have spared a few dollars and now I am faced with shoveling the sidewalk which is buried under many inches of snow :(

1. My understanding of the origin of the word "trivial" is that it comes from the education system used during the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. There was a "trivium" of three basic subjects (logic, rhetoric, and grammar), then a "quadrivium" of advanced subjects (arithmetic, geometry, music, and astonomy).

1. There is a woman outside with her two children. She has them bundled up in winter coats, sock caps and gloves. It is 54F/12C.

2. She is also the woman who lets her children dump sand on our tables. I am the only one who has not "spoken to her" about it yet, and asked her to clean it up. As I am here alone today, I think it will be my turn.

3. Why do so many people not care what their children do? Why do they have so much little disregard for other people's property? Oh, someone else will clean it up. Oh, it's okay if they break that, it isn't ours. Or do they all have crummy, dirtly, sloth-like homes filled with broken everything. A very factual question. A very ranting question.

1. Reading this put me in a good mood. It sounds fun!

2. I am rarely annoyed by children. But when I am, i just consider it payback for all the times I bugged people with my behavior when I was a kid. ;)

3. I think the kids must be playing in a sand table and dumping the sand on other non-sand tables.

Dalmaney

1. Once in kindergarten, two of my friends got in trouble for putting sand in the water table. They wanted to make an island!

2. Another time in kindergarten, I built a boat when I FINALLY beat the boys to the woodworking station. I don't think most kindergartens let four year old's wield hammers and nails anymore.

3. I remember stacking the choosing-time tags in kindergarten. For choosing time, our teacher would take little tags (livestock ear tags, technically) with our names and hand them out, and as you got your tag, you put it on the peg board to show what you were doing. That way only three people would be painting, or two woodworking, or whatever. The secret was to not be greedy and put your name on top. That never worked, as the teacher would for sure notice that. You had to put your name third or fourth, so you still got to choose something good but didn't get shuffled to last. People truly underestimate the reasoning powers of four and five year olds.

3. I'm also troubled by Rustell's sand-children.... Why? People bring their kids to our office all the time (even though our appointment letters tell them not to), and the kids are running around the waiting room, pulling pages out of the magazines, and just generally causing a disturbance. I guess they figure since we're a not-for-profit law office, and they're not paying anything for our services, that they can do whatever they want... It's pretty frustrating.

2. When I look out my window at work I see a little bit of garden, and sometimes a fat squirrel or a kitty. There are three different kitties who visit - a black fluffy one, a big tabby, and a grey one.

3. I used to live in AZ and Rustell's pictures are making me desert-sick (sort of like homesick).

1. If the file cabinet in my head serves me correctly Curlita went to U of A in Tucson.

2. I went to Tucson in September.

3. I have a friend who lives in Tucson who I miss a great deal.

1. I am shocked (shocked!) at Rustell's fine memory.

2. I also have a good memory and it freaks people out. I have found myself talking to people before and saying, "Oh, yes, we met! At so and sos party. You were wearing a yellow shirt. You don't remember? You were telling me about your rock collection." And then they start edging away from me, convinced that I am a deranged stalker.

3. I'm thinking about going to Tucson in the spring. My best friend from college lives there and I still have not met two of her four (four!) kids.

You need to come to Santa Fe! ? Seusomon Yep, I missed both of these. Will we visit the O'Keefe musuem?

1. Of course we will - can walk there from my house if you feel like a little excercise.

2. Rustell's office view reminds me of the view from my old apartment.

3. I want to know more about Labrador.

1. I've been told many a time that people assumed I had a thing for them because I remembered details of our earlier meetings. So I can relate.

2. My friend in Tucson does not have any children.

3. He is still attending UofA.

1. I just went to a rock concert for the first time in quite a while.

2. It was Counting Crows.

3. It was spur-of-the-moment; I need to pay more attention so I hear about these things earlier.

1. I was curious about Insipid's new avatar, and I discovered that it is a representation of rats who love Hainlam because she sent them felt. I am going to assume, now, that Insipid has pet rats.

2. I also discovered that Insipid is very adorable because I saw her photo on her forums member page when I was doing the detective work.

3. Last night I went to the eye doctor and found out that my eyes have not deteriorated at all in the past two years, but that my prescription was a little off. I ordered new glasses and they are awesome-looking! I can't wait until they come in.

3. There's nothing really stopping me from having potato chips for breakfast, is there?

1. I don't think there is anything wrong with potato chips for breakfast! They are kinda like vegetables right? ;)

2. I have had really BAD eating habits lately. I usually eat something at work for "breakfast" or "lunch" and that's usually some cookies, or chips, or whatever junk I can find in the vending machine and I have either water or soda. Then I don't eat again until dinner, and when I eat dinner I eat a TON! Like last night swear I ate a pound of spaghetti with sauce! :o

3. Food makes me sad/mad/frustrated sometimes.

1. I think I am going to go downtown and run a couple errands before I go to school instead of after.

2. My last exam of the semester is in 5 hours. I wish it was now.

3. After my last exam, I will go to Louis (campus bar) and celebrate! Or, at least, have a drink with some of my school buddies if they can stay, and meet up with Evan because he's done too and it's sad to drink alone.

-1- Yet another way Canada is so much better than the states: they have bars on university campuses. Amazing.

-2- I seem to remember that UMass had a bar in the student union, but I was only 17 years old when I went to school there, so I smoked pot instead. ;)

-3- I decided not to have potato chips for breakfast and opted instead for my typical breakfast of an entire pot of coffee.

1. I got half-way to work this morning and realized that I forgot to bring the scrapbook I stayed up until 2:30 this morning finishing (the "professional" scrapbooking job I was doing for a coworker). It was sitting on my sofa.

2. I turned around and went back home to get it, resulting in my being 30 minutes late to work.

3. As a further result, my secret car-stash of chocolate is completely depleted.

1) This explains why G-W-L-S thinks I'm adorable

2) My school pictures have been getting progressively worse throughout the years... this year's is horrible since I was trying to smile in my picture for the first time since I can remember because the lady taking my picture and telling me to smile was incredibly attractive.

3) G-W-L-S has inspired me to have my picture taken in front of the cheese section of the grocery store too...
