I have been away from here for awhile and now that I've returned I've found my knowledge of plants is still in demand.

I'm going to dose myself with some Calcium try to go to bed early tonight, I'm bone-tired, but I've got so much reading to do!

Tomorrow is a work day and I'm feeling dragged already. I hope I have some time off this weekend, I'm almost afraid to look at next month's calendar.

The "removed" part indicates a difference in generation. My second cousin's children would be my second cousins once removed, but they would not be my third cousins. By the time you get out to 10th and 11th cousins it probably doesn't make much difference anyway!

I just went to deliver something at a college campus and I was wishing I could just walk into a building and go to a class. I love going to school.

yeah, when you get into genealogy, we learnt that if your second cousin has a kid, they're you're third cousin
Actually, Lilac had it right: the child of a second cousin is a second cousin once removed.

A cousin is a relative with whom you share a set of grandparents. A second cousin is a relative with whom you share a set of great-grandparents. A third cousin is a relative with whom you share a set of great-great-grandparents. And so on in this fashion...

This holds in any form of genealogy I've ever studied. The value of this nomenclature is that it makes a plain distinction between one's familial relationships to a third cousin and to a second cousin once removed, for instance.

My first cousins once removed just call me 'aunty'. We figure they don't really have any aunts on this side (my cousin is an only child) so what the hey.

I remember trying to explain to another cousin (who is signifigantly younger than me) that his mom and my mom are sisters and that makes us cousins. That confused the hell out of him. He could understand that another cousin the same age was his cousin-but I was a way older so I must be an aunty. Aunties are old, cousins are not. He still calls me aunty.

I'm pretty happy with my Indian ATCs, me. (oowwaaa)

Ok so let me get this straight:
My mom's cousins are my cousins once removed? Their kids are my cousins twice removed? Their kids are my cousins three times removed and Megan's cousins four times removed?

We have always called them "kissin' Cousins" :p

My whole household has a touch of a respiratory bug; my husband's is SARS or the plague, Megan's is a bad cold and mine is "You're sick?"

Their kids are my cousins twice removed? No they are your second cousins.

Their kids are my cousins three times removed and Megan's cousins four times removed?
Their kids are your second cousins once removed, and Megan's (I think) third cousins ( but now I am getting confused...well think of it as 'not related enough for it to really matter' ;) )

The removed simply denotes that you and that relative are not of the same generation. You are one or more generation 'removed' from them.

There's three or so facts in there.

When I took Zoology in 9th grade I was in charge of the care and feeding of the rat along with my deskmate. We named it Mumphord.

I took him home for spring break, I used to take it outside and let it run around on my lawn a little. Whenever my Basset Hound would round the corner or walk outside Mumphy would scrabble up my leg and sit on my shoulder.

I've been there myself - I'm sorry about this. It's upsetting when the muse goes away.

But she'll come back - she probably just needs some rest. Sometimes, inspiration comes in cycles.

Take heart, you're talented and artistic. Allow yourself to rest or try something different. I'm sure your muse will return soon!

what a beautiful post!

we all need this close at hand.

The media has hyped up another "Storm of the Century" for later on today. Instead of shovelling snow, I will send the kids out to do it, and I will play on Nness.

I have to call up Citibank and yell at them AGAIN for screwing up our new account. Never bank with them, it is hell.

Hey, we're getting that exact same storm this afternoon too. 20 - 30 cm of snow by Wednesday.

Torontonians are complete and utter wooses when it comes to weather, so there will be much whining.

Well dingnab it!! tell the rest of us

My muse died...or else is in a coma

I feel so lost---I can't seem to paint.

I think I fear failure.

Maybe it's right there in front of you, but you just can't see it.
Sometimes you have to look away to see what's there.

Try spending a few days not thinking about painting. Do something completely different and don't touch a paintbrush. Before you know it the muse may sneak up behind you and tap you on the shoulder.

This is a duplicate post from the "members" forum. But, most of my buddies are here, so...

Hey guys! Here we are in Key Largo. We found an illicit wi-fi spot and are uploading some of the pictures, etc., that we've taken so far. To check it out, go to:

http://guerillart.org/florida

Wish you could be here with us, too, Cindy!

If we find another wi-fi spot (we're off to Key West today), I'll upload some more. I've been working on the pictures a little bit every night. Hope you all are well. My sympathies to those of you in the cold & snow!

I just sent off my chapter. It's a big steaming pile.

Oh well, I get to work on something else for the next month.

That was me breathing a sigh of relief. I think that I'll go watch Jon Stewart now. Also,

i'm so pissed off i don't even have words for it.

omg.

Inland Taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus ), Australia. The most toxic venom of any snake. Maximum yield recorded (for one bite) is 110mg. That would porbably be enough to kill over 100 people or 250,000 mice. These rare snakes are vitually unknown in collections outside of Australia.

ohhhhhhh.. i hope i did the right thing about my first hosting returns... i'm really worried about those laggers (missed deadline folks) and that they are going to be annoyed..... but i'm new at this... EEEEK... hosting can bite, huh?

I finished videotaping AGAIN for my national boards - but can't watch it because my love is watching Amazing Race. DANG IT.

I'm wickedly tired. Reallly. Wickedly. Tired.

I thought about lobstergirl as I drove past her 'hood today...I still have not met any of the LA Nervousness syndicate.:(

Other than the technicolor chunky 'lung oysters' i feel fine, a little post nasal drip is all. I have not coughed up anything of this consistency since I stopped smoking. (TMI)

I just left my sister-in-law at Target.

I spent too much money.

I have this really great idea for a book. The characters are very interesting and I think the book would be a hit. The problem is I can't write books. I wonder how much it would cost or if it would be worth it to hire a writer?

I like Monet. Quite a rebel at the time, green dress and all that. Certainly better than some people to hold the moniker of 'artist'. (who said pollock?)

However, I wanted to be Art Nazi. It has grown on me.

Gwensmom's bad luck has spread! Our furnace is not working. In our case though, we started having problems at Christmas and they were all oh yeah we'll have to get a replacement part-right after Christmas. They still haven't come with it and it's freezing. Asses.

Don't dis' the man, man. Okay, sure, he was a little off his nut, and really created messes rather then art, but he's my hero...okay? Don't mess with a girl's hero.

Oh, and I have to go to work today. First time in almost two weeks. And it sucks.

And what the hell am I doing posting first thing in the morning? I have four kids to get up and get ready for school.

I like Monet. He was quite the rebel and did things no body had ever done before in spite of all the criticism he got.

His gardens at Giverney are fabulous. Planted just for the purpose of having excellent colors to paint.

He painted far more than waterlillies. My favorite is his wife Chamille dressed in Asian clothing. It hangs in the MFA Boston and is enourmous. The details are amazing.

I did a detailed analysis of expected expenses until my next pay period and I think I can make it until then if I don't buy anything except food, gas and a haircut. I still have a lot of stamps so mailing can continue uninterrupted. Plus I will be getting a $45 reimbursement check from work soon.

Monet is ok but I would rather be Matisse.

I have to go on a field trip to the circus with Gwen's class on Friday. These field trips just wear me out.

I am well-acquainted with Monet's oeuvre and his place in art history. One can appreciate something without liking it. I just don't like Monet outside of a couple train stations. Not my cup of tea, which is nice, because if we all liked Monet best, who would like the other kiddies in the sandbox?

I'd really like to be Franz Marc...or Marc Chagall...or Michelangelo...or Malevich...or Master Theodorik...or Toyen.

I'm going to go look up finger-printing services now. Oh joy!

I do like Monet...in fact he is one of my favorites....but lets face it...I don't paint that way so don't want to "be Monet"

I am amazed at the different kinds of art I like...such as Miro - exquisite in simplicity yet begs to be looked at again and again....

I am sending good vibes to Theresa, Gwensmom and Lemur (yes even the art supply whore, child abandoning LEMUR!!!)

I don't paint like Monet either. More like the Fauvists.

I like a huge diversity of artists as well. Chagall, Van Gogh, Modigliani, Miro, Margitte, Matissee, etc.

I've never seen a Chagall in person though I would love to. And, no, it wouldnt be any fun if we all liked the same things. Which of course is why there are so many different types of art!

A Chagall in person is a singular experience. I saw something he painted of Washington DC, which is basically where I grew up, and I think I will be impressed for the rest of my life.

well, one of the things H and son do is play this online video game. it takes up her computer. and i get stuck doing all this work related crap. printing checks, checking balances. i would much rather the video game ended for one minute, and some of those chores got split.:yell:

i am sick of the video game. like, officially.:spank:

and then, one of her student loan accounts took a payment from my checking. WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. :blink:and they're saying there's no way that could have happened. but she didn't have the account info to set it up to be taken from my account. where does that leave me? grr.

i'm in a better mood though, really. :cool:i can't be stuck with all the bank chores again today because i just did them yesterday.

One more comment regarding the "Monet" designation: among certain gay male friends of mine a "Monet" is what we call some guy who looks like a hottie from a distance, but up close turns out to be a real mess.

There's a pop-culture source for this term, but I can't remember if it's from a TV series (like Kids In the Hall) or a film (could be anything from Boys In the Band to To Wong Foo).

It looks like my last sane neighbor is moving out today. :( And I'm already feeling an odd mix of despair & paranoia from reading too much Joe Bageant.

I went to an art gallery in Orlando recently just because they have 2 Chagall's there. Of course, they were on loan for an exhibit so I didn't get to see them! *sigh* One of these days.

My aunt's boss owns the gallery I went to and he is a huge art collector. He has 3 Chagall's of his own at home. Lucky SOB

chris took julian for his eye exam two weeks ago and julian 'refused' to get the eye drops in to dilate his eyes.... so i went on monday to make sure he got them.... it took the dr. and i to hold him down but it got done....

he has to get a stronger prescription and be seen again in six months.... :(

and if that doesn't correct his eye, then we are looking at surgery.... i have to find out what that involves because i just don't think i can do another major surgery with any of my kids.... not this soon.... but i guess if that is what it will take to fix it, then....... sigh... poor baby.....

hopefully the new rx will do the trick....

what is his prescription fixing, robyn?

if it's just a lazy eye, then the surgery (unless some problem crops up) will be about 1.5-3 hours, and he'll go home the same day

Cher: No, she's a full-on Monet.
Tai: What's a monet?
Cher: It's like a painting, see? From far away, it's OK, but up close, it's a big old mess. Let's ask a guy. Christian, what do you think of Amber?
Christian: Hagsville.
Cher: See?

My research for the day! LOL lookng up a movie quote - I shoulda known Gwensmom was correct.

I am amazed that there is a MALE Southern BAPTIST could give a feminist sermon without getting zapped by lightning!

yeah, it's for strabismus... they were sure it would correct itself quicker than this, with the rx he first got....

:'( but it hasn't...

it came about really quick- within a week of his eye turning occasionally, it was fully crossed... i was in edmonton for harrison's tx assessment, the week before his surgery, when it happened..... so i wasn't here to pick out glasses for him either....

and the ones daddy chose have broken four times!!! i currently have four pairs of nike flexible glasses frames on my kitchen table that i tried on him today... we aren't covered for a nother pair, only the one through the supplementary health coverage, every two years i think... but hopefully because it's a health related thing, and not just 'i want new frames' then it'll be okay.....

2 weeks ago when Russ (astronomy teacher) was talking about it, it made me yearn to go there, and see the old buildings, and the old churches, and Kepler's and Brahe's places

*sigh* Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever get to go overseas

You should go to Prague, Lilac.

I was going to suggest Prague but I'm totally biased, although Kathy will back me up on this.

I haven't moved from my desk.

I'm debating what I should read next.

I think that my space heater is on its last legs.

*Pokes head up like a chipmonk at the merest whisper of Prague* YES!! Go to Prague.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v256/cellissimo/CharlesBridge.gif

I get homesick for Prague sometimes. I was going to move there, but an illness in the family prevented me. I didn't want to be heartless, but there are so many times these days when I think "I should have just got up and moved to Prague.

I would love to wander through the windy, medieval streets again. There was this one time I got so totally lost, but I found a wonderful bookstore, tucked away in an ancient cobblestone alley. I tried to find it again the next day, but I couldn't, even though I thought I was retracing my steps. Prague is mysterious like that...

Oooh...Nymphette...my hot water heater bit the dust last summer. Had to replace it.

Now it seems as if my fridge is on the verge of quitting on me.

It's making all these strange "barking" sounds. I'm going to spray the motor with WD40 when i get home tonight.

There must be an epidemic of broken hot water heaters, furnaces and such.

My sister-in-law said their boiler went, the washer's motor is burning out and their dryer is shot.

I hope the epidemic doesn't affect me!

our only stroke of luck so far with things gone wrong here is that we didn't have to get a NEW water heater- it was just the elements that needed to be replaced....

i thought chris was crazy when he said it was an element.. it hought those things were heated by GAS....

but it's electric.... <shrug> who knew....

We read the poetry of Rilke for class last night. He was born in Prague, lived in Paris, and died in Switzerland.

Rilke. I've always really loved him. Especially that poem about preparing a corpse for burial.

Ooh such lovely pictures!

Sometimes I think I'd like to travel, but deep in my heart I know I am a homebody-and would rather be surrounded by my fabric stash than travel the world anyway. Of course I could get more fabric from around the world...

I went downtown today to talk about a commission. So much calligraphy and I am so lazy.

I have become obsessed with throwing junk out. Quite a job at our house.

This one is a pretty touristy spot, but still a very, very nice walk:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v256/cellissimo/05_prague_museum_district.gif

Behind the statue of King Wencelaus (SP?) is the National Museum filled with a stupefying amount display cases of rocks, insects, and the like. There was a cool recent history display that I enjoyed.

I love the poetry of Rilke, and I'd recommend reading. If you're fluent in German, then you have an advantage to enjoying his poetry.

P.S. Lemur, I'd travel to Japan just to buy fabric!

Oh, I agree Zhenechka! The CR is more than just Prague. Karlovy Vary, although somewhat touristy, is beautiful. I stayed in this little pension that was also a farm. My room looked over an apple orchard.

There's this thing that's haunting me. It stares at me every day. And only you can help me exorcise it from my desk. Tell me where you live, and send me your damn address. I'll even have to repack it, because I don't know what the hell is going on anymore....confused? Yeah me too.

It's almost a Nness reunion....one or two (or three or twenty) more and we're good to go.

I rescheduled my typing test, (although by now the position is probably already filled) and applied online for another one at a different hospital.

No one showed up at playgroup today (probabaly thought it was gonna rain again) so me and Meg went to the movies and saw the Pooh movie. It was her first theatre movie so I took a picture of her. (I have that and more pix to post)

After that we went to the mall and bought crap we didn't need or could afford, and saw the Easter Bunny. (another picture)

Other than Canada, the only other country I've been to is France. In May '99 I spent 2 weeks in Provence painting. It was heavenly. I'm hoping I can go back one of these days. Lack of money is the only thing that keeps me from hopping aboard the next plane out.

My one and only art instructor teaches in Provence occassionaly. She has some amazing connections there. A friend of hers runs the art school in Aix-en-Provence and he also lives in Cezanne's old house. Last time Nan took her students to France they actually got to go paint at Cezanne's place and she somehow managed to get the folks who own the sanitarium where Van Gogh lived to let them paint in his old room. Amazing! I wish I'd been there. *sniff*

I miss the Eiffel tower. My one night in Paris(before taking the train to Deiulefit, Provence) was so enchanting I have longed for it ever since.

Bonus fact: I got absolutely no art work done today, which is highly unusual for me. I guess I spent too much time doing home repairs, laundry and other mundane tasks. Now I don't have the energy to create. Maybe I'll dig out my photos from France for inspiration...

i feel like I should be doing something special today b/c I put on makeup, the whole shabang, and even different than usual too
