I have only ice-skated once, too, Sarahkate! I was four, and I went with my aunts and my mom, and they left me sitting on the ice for what seemed like a very long time while they skated around. It was a traumatic experience.

We found these great officer's trenchcoats, actually West German army surplus, for cheap. They're really excellent coats, and look great. After he bought one, I decided I had to have one, because it was so cool. One day we both happened to be at CostPlus and ran across a bin of Russian-style hats with East German insignia on them - this was shortly after reunification. The hats were the same shade of grey-blue as the coats, so we just had to get them.

We go to DC every couple of years for Christmas, so it's cold enough for the coats and hats (it almost never is here). We used different insignia, and we collect little pins that look, from a distance, like they might be obscure military insignia, but which are not (London Underground symbol pins, for example). We would march shoulder to shoulder and try to keep from cracking up. The very best is to stand stock-still where the metro doors will arrive, step assertively in, shoulder to shoulder always, glance icily around the car, then both sit down stiffly, face forward next to each other at the first set of seats by the door.

Unfortunately, we've never done it when we both wore beards.

Actually, the best reaction I ever had to that costume was when I wore it to a Halloween party when I was at grad school in England. I walked into the main room and found myself facing another student, who was Russian. She actually looked scared for half an instant.
