I always want to say, "Describe such-and-such" when I am in "Questions, Questions," but then I realize that it's a command, not a question. So here I get to have my way.
Example:
Describe an outfit you are wearing in a childhood portrait.
Answer: It's black velvet jumper-dress with a white blouse under it, and there is a plaid bow around the neck of the blouse. Also, black patent leather shoes. And my brother had a matching outfit, but his wasn't a dress. My grandmother made them.
(You can go into as much detail as you want. I like a lot of detail, though.)
Describe the view from the window closest to you right now.

Yea! A new chain-game!
Out my window at work, there is a nice tree-lined sidewalk between buildings, so sometimes I get to people watch -- lots of folks get lost trying to find the right building! Lots of light & shadows makes daydreaming fun! Plus, there's a chipmunk who built a nest in the pinestraw directly outside my window. He's very cute & fuzzy, and likes to look back in at me... Does he want in or do I want out?
Describe your favorite spot in your home.

Got it...
The window looks out onto our grass area, with a tree, a sidewalk and a bench. Beyond that the golf course, with lots of trees, plants and green, but the golf course is at a lower level so I can see beyond it to McDowell road which is lined with Palm Trees. I can also see the cars as they travel across the raised intersate, and beyond that the fantastic backdrop of the Estrella Mountains.
Describe your first car.

YAY! I love new chain games!!
Oooops! Cindi & Rustell answered at the same time -
answer to rustell's question--
my first car was a 1992 Plymouth Acclaim. It was a 4 door...silver with some ugly pinstripe detail down the sides. I never really liked that car looks wise...but it was my very first car (I was about 19 when I got it) so I loved it despite it's ugly exterior! The interior was a burgundy - I mean EVERYTHING was burgundy...the seats...floors....dashboard....seatbelts...you name it - it was all burgundy...which was kind of funky so I liked it! The seats were very comfortable & squishy. For a long time I had two air fresheners hanging from the rear view mirror - one was a sun & one was a moon. I never put any stickers/decals on the car except for on the driver's side back door window I had a small parking sticker for my college. I got a new car a few years ago & I never got rid of the Acclaim - it just sat in my driveway until we gave it away to some friends of my mom a few months ago! Memories!
I can't think of any answer to cindi's question because I don't like much about my house at the moment -- so I will ask it again for the next person--

favorite spot at home...that's a tough one because I spend most of my time at the computer...but...i think my living room, because it is cozy and multi-functional. My sofa and love seat are oversized and comfy (and black, with rust/gold print pillows), and the light is good enough to read in. And, then I have an entire wall of pictures of friends and family. The walls are almond and white. When I want to have an in home theatre experience I can. And, Brian is usually there.

She's about a year and 1/2 old...she's a calico with extra toes (looks like she's wearing mittens.) She's very talkative. She and I have Meowing conversations all the time.

Aw, that is sweet about your kitty, DOA. She sounds very cute.
My hair is shoulder length and dark brown. It's straight and extremely thick-- most barrettes won't close around my hair. It's smooth and shiny. I like my hair, for the most part. (No pun intended.)
Describe your least-favorite teacher ever.

My least-favorite teacher of all time - I can't remember his name, but he taught Early American Civilization. We'll call him Dr. Wilde because he reminded me of a picture I once saw of Oscar Wilde. He was, most definatly, the UGLIEST man I'd ever seen -- Tall, but very pudgy; he had a lumpy face with a pointy chin, drinker's nose (all red and swollen), these watery yellowish-brown eyes, droopy lids, a balding head (complete with the BAD comb-over), and weird stray hairs popping out all over. He was one of these professors where you could NEVER be right -- even about history. He would ask us opinion-type questions, and then chastise you to no end if he didn't agree whole-heartedly with your response. He sweated profusely and had horrible breath (I learned of this during one of his chastising-sessions). I hated him to no end, and barely squeaked through his class...

Hm.
Well- for starters it'd have to be in fall.
A walk in the crisp november weather, with a dog and my BF.
Thne we would return to our cozy home where the lobster would be just finishing up, and my BF and I would eat lobster with butter, and garlic mashed potatoes and steamed carrots with some sweet white wine, then have desert of maybe Tiramisu or a banana cream pie- then retreat to the den where we would watch a good movie cozying up under the blankets. Then we would depart to our big fluffy bed with a down comforter and perfect pillows and the get intimate, then fall asleep until the moring sun peeked through the blinds to greet us for a new day...
oh sigh.
Describe how you feel when you are sad.

I have had this color shooting into me off and on since September when I found myself laying on the floor all the time unable to concentrate or hold a pen or do much of anything but wander around and look at the stars... when I look at it closely I see green and purple twisting through my basic blueness -- yearning for moments in the sun, dancing away from possibilities, getting caught in someone's eye and liking to spin there even though it's too crazy, complicated and he's too far away...feeling the heartbeat of the world and knowing how much sickness has invaded --- feeling my own limitations as a human being. Sadness feels like blue on a hot day when green and yellow are everywhere........
Describe the last piece of art you did...

heh - this one's easy!
I took a self-portrait, and fiddled with in Photoshop until I had just an outline, ATC-sized.
I printed it onto a sheet of red cedarwood. (The smell or red cedar! Mmmm...)
I cut out the outline.
I glued the resulting shapes onto a whited-ochre patinaed brass ATC blank supplied by Hammerquill (a picture of the blank is on the object page).
I pressed to make it hold (the glue CURLS the wood!!), and let it dry.
Right now I'm making an envelope for it. :)

Then I will do it!
I think my happiest day was for out thanksgiving vacation in Washington, with my BF's family. They're such nice people, and not in the scary way!
We woke up early, and piled in the minivan. Three couples. Me and Rudy, Lalo ( rudy's bro) and his wife Lisa, and Tio Bob and Tia Bea (They live out there). They drove us from Moses Lake to Coulee Dam- all along the river! We saw Dry Falls and took fun, great pictures; horsed around at a turnout simply becuase it had a good view; and when we reached Coulee Dam, which was an old dam-builder town so it's small and quaint and on both sides of the river- the far side had a small indian casino!
Rudy and I only spent about 14 bucks because we understood that we wanted to save our money for REAL stuff and not for losing. We went outside, and crossed the bridge across the river, and saw a pair of BALD EAGLES. Real, live, wild ones! and the river moved so fast. And we also visited an indian craft store- which was very nice and pretty, but I didn't want to really buy anything. We went back to the casino for a bit, and everyone was still pumping coins in- but Lalo had about $30 bucks made.
We went to the convience/supermarket store and got some jojo's and at at the little-eety-beety park, and then went back to the casino, and foudn that Lalo had made over $100! Thankfully, he decided to quit there, and walked out with about $150. He's very lucky in the slots.
So we got back in the van and Tio Bob said " Have you guys ever been to Leavenworth?" and we said no. So he took us, from Coulee to Leavenworth!
And Leavenworth was just... GORGEOUS! A little ski resort town, all done up in bavarian style. All the shops were beautiful on the outside, and beautiful with all sorts of shiny things and great little stuffs to just handle and play with and goof around! It was so fun! And it was cold too, so it was an excuse to get all snuggly with my BF! It was great! We spent a good chunk of change there.
Then we went to get burgers and shakes at the little drive-in burger joint in Regina. They made delicious shakes, and Tio Bob joined in the heckling when they took too long to make our order. Which was fun- Tio Bob has this voice he only uses when he's goofing around, it sounds like a little boy with a lisp- so he was making us laugh as much as the heckling did.
We ate in the car on the way home- driving through Wenatchee was neat- becuase it looked so big from the main drag we were on, but was informed that what we saw was the entire town. Tio Bob then asked us all how we met, and Rudy and I got to share our story with them ( I originally hated rudy becuase I liked him and had anotehr BF at the time!) and then he took us back to his house, where we crashed out after getting in.
It was a fun, beautiful day- spending it with people that cared about me and that I cared about.
Oh. Okay. A DESCRIBER.
Hm.
Oh. Describe to me the person you dislike the most, and why.
nymphette
11-12-2003, 10:36 PM
the person in the world that i dislike the most is my mother in law.
she is bitter. she is mean. she never has a nice word for anyone. she has estranged 3/5 of her children, all the ones who have children. she lies and makes things up about her children and their spouses. she called chris and i liars to our faces about harrison- because she didn't believe some of the things we have to be careful of because of his particular disorder (like needing air conditioning because if he overheats his levels will go up. or that he had to have the g-tube put in because it was very likely taht he would lose his ability/desire to eat by mouth. she thinks i am lazy and just didn't want to bother with bottling him. i fought to keep him feeding orally for two months LONGER than any of the other parents our dietician has dealt with!) she holds the fact that she adopted my hubby and his twin fromtheir real mother (her daughter!) over their heads- that she did SUCh a good deed and sacrificed her entire life to do the right thing by them. and that her child rearing years were over and she wasted the best years of her life raising those boys. and what terrible kids they were. and how she is the most self sacrificng, unselfish person in the whole world and she can't figure out why nobody gives her the credit she is due. chris is a very giving person, he was always over there shovelling snow for htem, and mowing hte grass, etc... and she would alway s bring up the fact that NOBODY EVER HELPS them... and thy are getting older and they need help around the house and NOBODY EVER OFFERS to help them let alone actulaly HELP THEM. over and over. while she has a 36 year old daughter who lives at home without a job, who hasn't had a job in 18 years, has never moved out... and a son, chris' twin who is the exact opposite (yes, the evil twin syndrome) and lived there without paying rent either, and was completely capable of doing it for them but NEVER did, neither did his sister... and all we heard was bitching about how NOBODY ever helped... until the day i told her off because chris was there two days before that helping... but 'nobody ever helps'....... <sigh>
luckily, we dont' have to deal with her crap anymore because ever since the ignorant phone message she left on our machine i have cut all ties. we had just moved here and things were very up in the air, and she assumed we would be bringing julian over to their place while we took harrison for an ammonia level (we used to drop him off to visit while we went quite regularly, but hadn't for over a month because of them being sick, us having other appts and doing it during hte day,e tc.) why she would ASSUME we were going to is beyond me... but she left us a message saying how they wasted their entire day waiting for us to come and we didnt even have the courtesy to call them and how ignorant we are for doing that, etc. BUH-BYE as my sister would say. we haven't spoken to them since.
oh, and she never accepted harrison as her grandchild. not sure if it is because julian is chris' spittin g image and harrison is definitely mommy's baby, or if it is because he is imperfect and 'sick'.... but they never accepted him.. it was alway s'so, when do we get to see julian? when are you bringing julian over to visit?'.... if you can't love both of my boys, you arent' allowed to love either.
and my husband supports this 100%.
describe the most beautiful piece of art you have seen in a gallery and who did it.

It was a Mondrian.
And it was unfinished.
He does the De Stijl style of painting, with the squares of different colors. When I first saw a Mondrian when I was young, I thought- "What Crap! I can do that!" And I thought that about all Modern art, until I learned about Mondrian.
The whole reason he painted those squares in those places, is his attempt at creating the PERFECT composition. Balance and color and shape in perfect harmony.
The unfinished one I saw is in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He had painted maybe two squares, the entire rest of the canvas had red and yellow and blue and black tape crossign across the white canvas, making panels of color and stripe. I stood back and alternately covered each panel with my hand and thought of the colors he tape-outlined them. And I was in awe- it WAS art. It was so difficult to see what exactly was the best way to go, what decision to make- if he made the wrong move, he could ruin the entire piece.
I walked up as close as I could to it without crossing the line. I saw the dried sticky on the back of teh tape of teh pieces that hung off the sides of the canvas. And I looked around... and I touched it- on a piece of yellow tape. And I thought about how difficult it was to get that one piece of tape in JUST the right spot. I thought about what maybe his next step was, and how he thought it would look when it was done. And Most of all, I thought how it would never get finished. It was incomplete, and yet to me- it was perfect.
god, wasn't that just the dorkiest thing?
Tell me about the house you lived in when you were Five.
It was grey and had a dozen fruit trees. A very large rope swing that swung over the street in front. There was a weird bridge between two large evergreens that was a shelter for firewood. I hung out up there. I wrote things in the tree like "ana dumn" and "hat ana" and "stopid ana". When my sister found it a couple of years later, I was spanked.
My dad dug out the basement. It wasn't there, so he just dug it out. I think I learned something from that. We sponsored a family from Laos that lived down there for a year or two.
The backyard was 15 feet from the freeway. I innocently threw rocks at the cars creating thousands of dollars of damage. I had no idea. My neighbor was 10 years older than me but she was mentally handicapped and we got along great. Sadly, I grew up and became an asshole during the first stages of puberty. :(
I met my best friend at age 5. We spent every single day with each other even though we didn't go to the same school except Kindergarten. I used to pee out of my 2nd floor bedroom window onto the garden. Once, the window slammed down on my pee-pee and Jason couldn't lift the window back up. Lets just say that my mom was not pleased. But Jason and I are still best friends.
The upstairs was two bedrooms, one for me, the other, my sister. At about this age, she went out on the roof and got struck by lighting. She was a bit freaked, but fine. Our cat Misty crunched mouse bones at night in the attic.
The carpet downstairs was a nasty brown/green. At dinner, we sat at table near the bay window and watched the freeway traffic stop and go. I used to dream there was an evil short witch that chased me around the house while casting spells on me. The only thing I remember about the kitchen cabinetry was exactly were the powdered milk was kept (bottom left corner, next to a cylindrical box).
Uh, I could go on an on. I loved that time of my life. At xmas, my great aunt would come from Minnesota and make gingerbread houses with pinecones and gumdrops for trees. I could go on and on about being that age at that house. It was very memorable.

The first time i ever got drunk was quite an interesting experience...i remember most of what happened lol...we were drinking hurricanes...and they had quite a bit of alcohol in them...and after i was buzzin a bit i slipped walkin down the hallway on a slick spot and spilled my drink...so i got me another one naturally lol....i sat around w/ some friends and we all chatted...and then the party moved outside...by this time i'm starting to get really drunk...nothin's spinnin yet but i'm feelin pretty numb all over and i'm talkin to someone while they're getting some things out of their trunk, resting my hand on their car and they go to close the trunk, and it pops right back open w/o shutting...we think nothing of it and so she goes and tries shutting it again a second time, but before she can a guy runs over and asks if i'm ok...now i'm sittin there and can't think for the life of me why he would be asking me if i was ok...well apparently when she closed the trunk the first time, my hand just happened to be resting halfway inside the trunk which is why it popped back open and apparently he witnessed the whole thing lol..so he asked if i was ok and my response "well...i can't feel anything right now...ask me in the morning!" so yeah...we did a lil more drinking, and i went inside the house...stumbling into my room...i think i may have knocked over a vase w/ some water and flowers in it on the way to the bed...but i managed to lay down and fall asleep...i woke up and my hand was swollen and black and blue lol...and the moral to ths story "don't stand near vehicles after you've been drinking...or at least keep away from trunks and anything that can open and close" lol
i guess that describes it lol...now....

My favorite vacation that I have gone on so far was one week during August of 2001. It was a hectic busy week, but it was great.
My friends Nicki, Cheryl & I drove to Massachusetts on a friday night - stayed at my aunt's house overnight then headed to York, Maine for 5 days, 4 nights of camping - while we visited with my family (they were renting a small cottage at the beach) - I decided then that I really HATE camping - setting up a huge tent, using public showers & all - but it really was a blast. We got drunk after drinking wine coolers, a big bottle of cheap fruity wine, and Jed's Hard Lemonade. We stumbled around the campground trying to find our way to the public bathrooms at 2:00 AM, giggling all the way. And of course the best part was being at the ocean, spending hours swimming in the freezing cold water. We had to head back to New York on Wednesday because on Thursday we had to go to a concert in Connecticut.
So we drive the 6 or so hours back to New York, I drop Nicki & Cheryl off at home and I spend Wednesday night in my own bed. On Thursday my boyfriend (Cory) and I go back to Nicki's house & pick her up again - and we drive about 2 1/2 hours to Hartford, CT where we saw Godsmack, The Deftones, and Puddle of Mudd at the Meadows. We stayed overnight in a hotel & drove around Hartford a bit the next morning & drove back to Albany.
I love road trips and the beach and concerts, so overall it was a great time, my best vacation yet.

Ick. Okay...
My face has a long shape. My skin is never, ever clear. Right now I have a bunch of zits along my jawline and one in the middle of my forehead. (So attractive.) The color of my skin is very fair with a pink tone. My eyes are almond-shaped and dark brown, with medium-length but stick-straight eyelashes. My eyebrows are out of control. They have a nice shape but grow very fast and I hate tweezing. Right now I basically have unibrow. My nose is quite large and slightly hooked. My lips are medium-sized with pink skin. My ears don't stick out. I have high cheekbones.
Geez, I sound very ugly!

Well - I am still in my "morning clothes" -- yes I know its 10:30 - shut up!
So I am wearing big fluffy cheetah spotted slippers - my son calls them "kitty shoes" They are light brown with black spots and they are the open-backed, clog kind.
Later today, I will wear my trusty, Birkenstock Boston clogs! Whoo - they are brown leather with the buckle, open heeled - I even wear them when it is raining - and I live in the Seattle area so you know what that means.
I used to have the coolest pair of grey/black flecked wool clogs that I wore almost everyday...but Birki doesn't make that color anymore - *bah*

I have had a hundred crushes, but I guess the biggest was Jamey. He was in my class from kindergarten through 8th grade, and his parents and my parents were close friends. It all started in 4th grade when he said, "I like your boots," to me on the playground. I remember it vividly. I looked at him with new eyes that day, and kept on liking him for the next four years until my family moved away. He had big brown eyes and dark brown hair. In fact, when bluecrayon talks about goofy boys with dark hair, he comes to mind. Olive complexion. He started out small and thin, got a little bit chubbier in 5th grade, and then got thin and muscular by 8th grade. His sister used to babysit me and my brother, and she would bring him along. Heart-stopping! I was so shy, it almost killed me to be around him. He was a really nice boy. Not terribly bright, but so sweet. He was very popular and I was definitely not, but he never acted mean like a lot of the other "cool" kids. I heard he got married last year, and it actually made me a teensy bit sad!

11-18-2003, 07:40 PM
My first car was a chocolate brown, 4-door Audi. It had velvet like brown and tan seats. It was a stick shift that went up to 5th gear and that car could move! My favorite thing about this car was that the radio stayed on when the car was off and it didn't run the battery down...after all, that's what's important in highschool...having a radio/tapeplayer that will stay on when the car is parked so that you can dance to exhaustion without running out of gas or batteries.
oops...I forgot my question...edited to add it.
If you could be a fly on the wall in any situation in the last 20 years, what wall would you want to have been on and why? That is assuming that as a fly you had the ability to hear and understand what was going on. heehee

Ms. Beherec. She was interesting. She tied a kid to his seat because he wouldn't stay in it. Every other letter in her name is an e. She was excited that I was in her class, because my brother had been in my class and so she knew my mom would always be there to help -- cookies for parties, crafts, on all the field trips. She came to my wedding and took a ton of pictures and a video, which I have never seen.

My first date was a total disaster. I was in 9th grade, he was in 10th. He didn't have his driver's license yet (not that I was allowed to go on car-dates...), so his mom drove us. We ate at Wendy's (big spender! :)) then went to see a movie (King Ralph with John Goodman.... what a bad movie!). All during the movie he was leaning over and blowing in my ear (really blowing... not sexy AT ALL!), and trying to feel me up. Not only was I not willing (I barely knew him!), he had horrible onion breath! His mom picked us up right after the movie and drove me home. I jumped out in the driveway, thanked his mom for driving us, waved, and never spoke to him again! :D

Got in an argument with my hubby about a staple gun (he was supposed to find it for me a week ago... couldn't... didn't tell me until last night!). Spent a few last-minute quality petting moments with my 3 kitties, brushed my teeth and went to bed... Pretty boring! :D

The place I go to be alone is the attic in my house, which just a regular room with slanty ceilings. It has a window at two ends, and two comfy armchairs, and the walls are lined with my bookshelves. My stereo and computer are up there, too. It's very cozy, a little too dark, and can be quite hot in the summer and cold in the winter. My cat likes it too, so I suppose I am not really alone when I am there.
Describe your best friend.
His last name starts with HS, but its pronounced SH. As a child, he refused to steal girl panties from Sears with me. He is sometimes aloof, but its endearing. I often neglect our relationship. Our friendship is for ever with lots of long pauses. He was destined to be a corporate richie-rich, but has become a creative kattie-cat. He surprises me often. Very kind. A couple small beauty marks on his face. Plays guitar. Short hair. Treats stuffed animals as living animals.

My most memorable "Oh shit, I could have just killed myself" experience is very brief. I was driving my grandmother's car because the car I usually drove back then was in the shop for the day. I was going to work. At the mall. :( I was parking on the top level of the garage, and I wasn't used to the car. Instead of stepping on the brake, I stepped on the gas-- REALLY HARD! And somehow I managed to switch and slam on the brake as fast as I could, and I missed the wall by, like, half a millimeter. I could hear the blood rushing through my head. The adrenaline high lasted for twenty minutes.

On a typical work night I come home, walk in the door to be greeted by my happy doggy, Delilah! She runs to the kitchen door as I walk in, wiggling her butt around. She looks like she is dancing so I laugh & give her hugs & then let her outside. Then if my boyfriend is home I say hi to him and talk to him for a while then I usually head upstairs and put my pajamas on if we aren't going out anywhere that night! Yes, I usually have my jammies on by 5:30 PM!

the largest blue thing in the room is my sweater. it is actually heidi's sweater. i just put it on because i had to come to legal aid and the shirt i was going to wear had something on the placket. so, i am doing an art deco match. i'm wearing these kind of brownish gold art deco velour pants and a columbia blue sweater. i don't mind. nobody thinks i'm a good matcher. but i think i'm a cool matcher. so anyway, heidi is a lot bigger than me, so the sweater suggests maternity, though it is not. it also covers my bottom. but it isn't a sweatshirt, though it is a lot like a sweatshirt. ha.

12-11-2003, 02:57 PM
My neighborhood is situated between a largely poor Latino neighborhood sprinkled with artists and young singles and people living on the edges (the Mission) and a bustling and prosperous gay mecca (the Castro) -- Noe Valley, my neighborhood, is both rich and not rich, a little working class still colors the streets balancing the wealth which is everywhere ($1M dollar houses abound and lots of shiny cars and people) -- but my block is a small microcosm of the world -- a woman from Greece lives next door, a man from Korea lives on my other side, a man from Japan lives down the street next door to Big Mike, my biker friend....an old guy, Leo, lives across the street in the same house he grew up in and next door to him lives an extremely wealthy software designer and next to him live two college professors who bought their house before the real estate market went crazy. I live on a steep hill, I have a clear view of the entire bay and I can see Berkeley on clear days (I often wave at Hammerquill!) -- my block voted almost to a person for Matt Gonzalez, the Green Party candidate, for Mayor of San Francisco, so I guess we are fairly progressive a block of disparate people. I like everyone on my block and this fact helps me keep my knee from jerking when I start to think in terms like "Yuppie" and "SUV driving scum" --- ;)

During the week, my alarm is set for 6:10 a.m. (hubby gets up at 5:30 - but I never hear his alarm!) I usually hear the alarm at 6:11, grumble & push a cat off my head & turn off the alarm. Stomp & grumble into the bathroom & close door. Turn on faucet to a dribble for cat on counter to drink. Turn on shower to hottest setting. Potty. Turn on hair-straightener. Brush teeth. While brushing, turn off kitty-faucet and let cat out of the bathroom. Finish brushing teeth. By now the bathroom is all steamy and warm. Turn down water temp and shower, shave, wash hair. During shower, hubby comes in, coughs and complains about all the steam. Tell him he's letting out all the hot & wish him a good day & love. Turn off shower, put hair in towel & dry off. Put in contacts. Go into bedroom and put on sweats. Go to kitchen and drink some water. Smoke cigarette on back patio. Come back in -- back to bathroom. Put on makeup & dry hair. Back outside to warm up car. Back inside -- straighten hair and get dressed for work. Go to kitchen -- gather up all my stuff for the day - cell phone, cigarettes, lighter, lunch, bottled water, etc. - Out to car and on to work....
Describe the jewelry you're wearing today.
Dalmaney

I'm not wearing much jewelry, as it's kind of a schlep to my exam kind of morning.
I have a silver analog watch. It's got a square white face about 1.5 x 2 cm big, and a metal band that's sort of chain-mail-ish. It's flexible and buckles, but won't wear out because it's metal. I like it, but the face is getting a little scratched.
I'm wearing two rings. One I bought in Egypt for a no doubt overpriced twelve dollars. It's silver (like sterling, this time) and has the heiroglyphs for "happiness" on it. They are (in order) sun, scarab, reeds, dish. It's very cute and I wear it almost every day, on my right ring finger. My other ring I never take off. It's a copper-brass-nickel twisted together ring, and it lives on my left thumb. Sometimes it turns me green, but I kinda think that's neat.

the strangest person i work with has the days of the week embroidered on all of her shirts(...probably even the weekends, but i'm not sure about that.) she has done this to simplify her life. she used to keep a calendar where she would record what outfit she wore each day so that outfit would not be worn again for at least 4 weeks. she loves plaid and gingham and while she was pregnant, she would often wear a gingham shirt with a big ruffle all around the bottom. she had this same shirt in both red gingham and black gingham. she puts lotion on her legs over her pantyhose. she refuses to wear any color underwear except white. last christmas she gave me a giant jar filled with potpourri and christmas lights. i like her a lot and she's my friend. :)
describe your bedroom.
Cuilanië
12-13-2003, 09:13 PM
Rectangular, a little irregular (corners not perfectly 90°...) roughly 3m x 4,5m.
Big window in the middle of the south wall, one of the narrow sides.
Curtains in red, blue, yellow, and green; wide, assymetrical vertical stripes, and stylised motifs.
The door is in the east wall, in the corner near the window, opens inwards and to the left.
First thing you see when you walk in, twin free-standing wardrobes backed against the west wall, also in the corner near the window. They are about 70cm wide each, with two drawers on the bottom, in a pale woodlike decor.
The one on the left has my clothes. The one on the right has my art, craft and sewing supplies, and also serves as the liquor, wine, and chocolate closet. :)
There's some clutter in the space between the wardrobes and the south wall, mostly my ex's stuff that he left here and leftover wood panelling from when we did the floor.
On top of the wardrobes are two travel bags, mine, and some computer-related miscellany. I usually have my winter coat, too long to hang *in* the wardrobe, hanging from the peg on the front of it, along with whatever washing couldn't go in the dryer last time that I haven't worn or bothered to fold or otherwise put away. My umbrella hangs from the handle of the right-hand door.
My laundry in a purple and orange ski bag (don't ask - I didn't buy it) sits in front of those wardrobes.
To the left of the wardrobes are my suitcases, stored like matriochkas, one into the other so only the largest one is visible. It only just fits between the wardrobe and the bookshelf.
On top of the suitcase are various papers, newspaper articles, and some clutter, things I don't know where to put yet, and so left there.
The bookshelf is pine, unvarnished, maybe 50cm wide by 1,5m tall, and has five shelves. It holds some books, mostly the ones conflicting in size with the ones in the big bookshelf.
Top shelf is mostly taken up by a four-volume complete edition of Zola's Les Rougon-Macquart, which I have mostly yet to read, some Shakespeare, some Balzac, other stuff.
On top of one of the Zola tomes, a tall narrow vase containing a single dried red rose, attendant small dried flowers, one dried red maple leaf brought to me from Canada by an acquaintance, and a dried chestnut which holds everything in place.
Usually here goes one of my candle-holders, a simple one I love, in black-coloured metal wire, one circle as the base, a second circle tilted on this one at about 30°, and two circular places for the candles, one at the bottom and one on top. Holds dark blue candles at the moment.
On the shelf in front of the books, bottles of various sizes and a few knick-knacks.
Second shelf has more books, mostly trade paperbacks. It has my Amélie Poulain album, a gift I received at the same time as the soundtrack. This shelf has my incense holder, not much used these days, some half-burned wide-ish candles, a little blue vase, empty.
Third shelf has my travel guides, my English and my German dictionaries, Maus, and the Bible my mother gave me. Two candle-holders I never use - a gift that wasn't really me, but I'm too nice to get rid of them. And my clay perfume-oil burner, which doesn't get much use anymore, either. Missing from this shelf are another pair of candle-holders, black as well, hammered iron, somewhat serpentine in shape, which I got in Prague. Wine-red candles.
Fourth shelf is the miscellaneous one. A deck of cards, a third candle holder I don't use to complete the set with the previous two, perfume samples, massage oils and other fun stuff like that... Ultraviolet, Angel and Allure also share this shelf. Allure (Chanel) is the only one I wear with any kind of regularity - it's very light and suits me well.
Fifth shelf has some tapes, a shoebox, various comic books (the French/Belgian style, not American). In front of the bookshelf are various papers, envelopes, ephemera, sorted out into shoeboxes and one plastic bag.
Left of the bookshelf, my CD collection in a black revolving column. This also serves as my bedside table, and unsurprisingly has books stacked on it. Of note, The Story of Art. The iron candle-holders are there for now, and my alarm clock, some other stuff, and the rub I use for muscle, joint, and back pain.
In front of this is a varnished pine stool, serving as a second bedside table, holding up the circle candle-holder.
The darkish-chrome (unsure of proper name for that color) halogen lamp is between the CD column and the bed.
The east wall, after the door, has my desk, varnished pine again, with a hard chair of the same.
Clutter and computer games on top, plus my computer screen, keyboard, mouse, blue mouse pad with emoticons, black and chrome halogen desk lamp, computer speakers, and a TV antenna which just sits there impotently - I have a TV module on the computer, which I never ever use.
Among the clutter, Nervousness envelopes, tennis balls, assorted pens, my coffee mug, a hand-painted vase, the remains of a fresh loaf of bread in a plastic bag, ATCs, post-its, the cell phone I stopped using a while ago, printed emails...
On top of the screen, a stuffed frog. On the base of the lamp, an adorable, tiny little sleeping kitten.
Four drawers, containing mail, writing, collage supplies. The last drawer is dedicated to photography.
Under the desk, assorted electrical cables, and the computer itself. Books are stacked on the computer (surprised?) along with some papers.
To the right of the desk, between it and the door, is where I store my large paper sheets, my cutting board, and my drawing board.
Left of the desk, at the foot of the bed, the big bookshelf, pine again, 1,50m wide by 2m tall, eight shelves, deepish.
This holds my collection of paperbacks, all in a jumble since my last (incomplete) attempt to catalogue them, but mostly sorted out by genre and language.
On top, neatly folded theatre costumes and a nice dark blue hat, scientific magazines.
The fourth shelf has the cases of recently-and-currently-played CDs.
Fifth shelf, the musical installation (won't quite call it a sound system...): combination 3-CD player, radio, and tape; speakers; some borrowed CDs and tapes.
Sixth shelf, printer, scanner, miscellaneous. The computer science book I've been meaning to read.
Eighth and last shelf, magazines, computer stuff, my ex's papers. The desk makes a little nook with the bookshelf and the corner of the bed, and I have a stack of newspapers, magazines, and various papers there.
The last thing on the east wall, between the big bookshelf and the north wall, another, smaller bookshelf, wooden but painted a soft orange. This holds my ex's books and some knickknacks of his, but one shelf has a hardcover collection of mine. My mending (wishful thinking is more like it) is there, and the tripod for the camera. Some more sewing supplies crowd the floor between the bed and the shelves.
My bed is against the north wall, with the head to the west. It's a double, very comfortable and stiff enough for my back. The coverings are dark blue, cotton. Two pillows and a down comforter. One small black stuffed panther. Some books I didn't bother removing after the last time I hunted some reference down.
The floor is wood panelling, mostly matches the desk.
There should be a rug beside the bed, but it's waiting to get cleaned (very dusty).
Under the bed are hidden newspapers, magazines, papers of mine, shoeboxes of stuff (very useful, shoeboxes...)...
The walls are... pale peach? I've no head for fancy colour names. Trimmed in the same soft orange as the bookshelf.
On the east wall, a framed Egyptian papyrus.
On the west wall, a family picture from my youngest uncle's wedding. A sepia watercolour of the cathedral of Chartres and the Eure river. A moulded stone reproduction of a sculpted detail of the cathedral of Rouen, representing St. George and the dragon. A large, framed photo of me taken in Mont Tremblant provincial park in October 1999.
On the north wall, two framed photographic compositions by my ex. I haven't redecorated since he left, but those compositions will go soon, even though I appreciate them for their artistic value... as will probably the photo of me - I'm used to seeing it there, but it's a bit narcissic for my tastes now that I live alone.
I don't think I've forgotten anything... It helps that I am sitting in this room at the moment and have instantaneous reference available... :P

Everyone is so modest! No one will describe the best art they ever made?
The best art I ever made (which really just means what I liked the best, right?) was a bookend I made in pottery class in high school. Two ceramic slabs, each an inch thick, are joined at the bottom. A thinner slab in front was cut away into the shape of a hippie-girl kneeling. She has long brown hair and a bouquet of flowers. She has a Navajo-patterned headband across her forehead, and she is wearing jeans. The glaze is glossy and the colors are very bright.

In twenty years... More lines on my face. Laughter lines, I hope. Not too much grey in my hair, if I take after my mother for that. If I'm careful, I'll be in relatively good shape. More wisdom in my eyes, less reserve on my face for the casual observer to see. My hair might be grown long again by then, I don't really know. I hope I get to be one of those funny little old ladies (that'll be in much more than 20 years, though...), the ones with a mischievous smile and kindly, still-young eyes, who wear their years like old friends...

Favorite book.
This being an impossible question, I'm narrowing it down by assuming it's (a) the favorite book I own (thus ruling out several books in the British Library and one in Dublin) and (B) my favorite book as a physical object, since that's easier to decide than my favorite for its contents.
It is Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, in the Pennyroyal Press edition. Its case is almost 18" high, 3" thick, with a red leather spine and grey cloth covers. The book inside is much thinner, the rest of the space being taken up with a case of prints of the illustrations on their own. It is half-leather, again deep red, with grey paper printed with an extreme closeup of part of Alice's face, showing the grain of wood engraving, which is how it was illustrated. Endpapers are a warm charcoal color.
The book is hand printed with some of the finest presswork I have ever seen, both on the text and the Barry Moser wood engravings. There is just enough bite into the paper to feel lovely and see with low-angle light. The book is just sized to be just holdable with comfort in one hand (resting along the forearm) for reading, and yet luxuriously large. There are glosses and notes along the foredge of the pages in red, with occasional blue. Some illustrations to the glosses are in red, some in green or blue.
Barry Moser is the finest wood engraver living, and his talents and style and imagination are better suited to the Alice books than to anything else he's approached. His illustrations can be very dark (in feel) but are always off-kilter, bizarre, peculiar, chaotic.

I think I am - it was very difficult to think of any major choices that I feel went wrong. I'm very happy with who I am now, and everything that I've done has created some part of that. There are small regrets ("Damn! I shouldn't have been so snappy this morning!"), and disappointments ("Why does she have to go?") . If I had it all to do again, I'd probably do mostly the same things, though I would definitely like to "fast forward" through some stuff!

When I turned 6 years old we had just moved to New York from Massachusetts, and a few days later I went with my dad to his grandparents' farm. They let me have a kitten. He was the runt of a litter of barn cats and the mother brought him up to the house and abandoned him. We named him "Wally" (my dad picked the name) after my great grandfather. He was my very first pet. He lived to be almost 14 years old. I believe I was 19 when he died.
Wally was very sick for the last few months of his life. He probably should have been put to sleep, but my mom & my sister & I were selfish and tried to keep him alive by bringing him to the vet over & over again to have liquid drained out of his lungs. My mom spent hundreds of dollars that she couldn't really afford trying to keep him alive. He still walked around like a normal cat but you could see he was ill, and he barely ate at all.
One night I was sitting at home alone. My mom was still at work and my sister was at my dad's house. I let Wally inside when I heard him scratching at the front door, and he went upstairs. A while later I went upstairs and found his laying on his left side in the hallway. His arms were outstreched. He often slept like that but I stared at him for a moment and realized he wasn't breathing. I broke into tears immediately and got down on the floor next to him and said something to the effect of "please don't die!" but it was too late, he was obviously already dead. I knew my mom would be home from work soon and I was so afraid to tell her because Wally became her cat, he was always following her around, and he always kept her company. I was in shock and so upset at the same time. I kept checking on Wally to make sure he really was indeed dead, and of course he was. I found a box big enough for him and folded up a blanket inside of the box. I kissed him goodbye for the last time and placed him in the box.
When my mom came home she walked through the front door and saw me standing there and the moment I saw her face I burst into tears again and I could barely speak. Through my sobs I managed to say "Wally is dead" so she hugged me and she cried too. It was very sad. One of the saddest moments in my life in fact.
The next day my dad and my sister took the box with Wally in it and buried him at my great grandparent's farm.
*sigh* That was a sad thing to rehash. Sorry for it being so long!
Describe the street you live on.
Seusomon
01-08-2004, 02:04 PM
It's really just one block long, althoug there are several dead-end lanes branching off from it. All the houses are adobe, and all are different - some very neat and expensive and new looking, others very rustic, overgrown, and quirky. There are large trees around, although mostly you just see their tops behind the houses. Cars are parked along the street, most of them on the north side. There's usually a few people out walking, and perhaps one car either coming or going. Since the street doesn't go anywhere, the only traffic is people who live on it (or perhaps around a corner). It has a very open, airy, desert-town feeling to it.

my favourite piece of jewellery is my charm bracelet....i have a dolphin charm, a heart with some flowers and Sweet 16 on it, a Grad Cap with my name and 2002 engraved on the back, and a cell phone. The grad charm and the bracelet itself serve as my Grad Ring. The bracelet itself is silver, all the charms are gold, except for the Sweet 16 heart.

One side of a piece of cloth some friends brought back to me from Japan: it is deep navy blue with lines of small white dots creating hexagons. Each hexagon is divided into six equilateral triangles, each equilateral triangle into three isosceles triangles, so that there are many other patterns to be found, smaller hexagons, stars, and so on. The other side of the cloth, magically, is dark red, with larger white dots in overlapped fan-shapes. They knew I'd like it.

Well, weekends and weekdays are, of course, much different. Weekdays are much more typical to each other, though...so i'll describe one of them. I wake up at 6, put out the dogs, depending on the weather - put the two horses out to pasture, make coffee, get my son ready for school, make breakfast, drop my son off at my friend's house so that he can catch the bus....drive 70 minutes to the office (if I'm not working from home that day or going to a site)...umm...sit at my desk and go over calculations...or interpret data...or write technical papers...or just stare blankly into my computer screen....or whatever...get home around 6:30....put out the dogs, put hay and oats in the horse's and Gruffie's stalls...help my son with homework...make dinner...get on the computer..go to bed.
Pretty much boring.

Hmmmm......well, there were alot of awkward silences.....stolen glances....and sweaty hand-holding! We went to the local school disco and got blinded and deafened by the Biology teacher who considered himself a bit of a DeeJay.
The date ended with a half-hour discussion on her doorstep with only about a dozen words spoken...painful silences that we didn't want to end, finished off with a rather chaste kiss before she vanished back into her parents house. The walk home was magical.

We sat outside at Enzo restaurant in Provincetown, MA on Cape Cod, under a big dark green umbrella, watching the kalidescopic jumble of people that strolled by and the sun setting beyond the harbour. The dessert was unadorned (didn't need it) and small (thank goodness): a dark chocolate mousse cake, oozing with a molten chocolate center, served warmmmm-mmmmm.....
Oh, sorry - you said DESERT!
I've only been to one, the Sonoran. It was like being on an alien planet compared with the Hudson Valley of NY. Everything was different - the wide empty horizon, the cities like giant strip malls that blended together so you didn't know when you crossed from one to the other, the dessicating wind, the high temperature, the color of sandy sand to the horizon, the mesas, the plants both dead-looking and blooming at the same time, the insects, the animals (there were birds living in hollows within the Saguaro cactus), the half-ridiculous, half horrifying human-imposed names like "Bloody Gultch". And so many swimming pools filled with precious water drained away from the Colorado River.
When I flew home and the jet descended through the cloud layer, I was struck with amazement; everything was so GREEN, like the Emerald City had exploded all over the valley! I never noticed that before.
