View Full Version : I don't get it!?!?!

So here's the idea -
person #1 posts something they don't get/don't understand (this can be serious/funny/etc)....
person #2 offers their explanation ...it can be serious....silly...whatever...
person #2 then posts something they do not understand....
person #3 offers their explanation to the previous question...
and so on...
got it?
Something tells me this little "game" might not catch on...but I'm curious to see what happens.....and dammit...there are some things I don't understand that I want someone to explain to me! :P
so here goes:
I don't understand why there are so many elderly people who drive minivans? What the hell do they need a minivan for?
gwensmom
10-21-2003, 11:58 AM
Grandchildren of course! Most grandparents have more grandchildren than they did children. They also need lost of room to haul around all the stuff they buy for their grandchildren.
I don't get why anyone thinks they need a Hummer.

Oh, I think it is a primal over-compensation thing. My MOTHER really wants one. I think she is tired of being intimidated by other drivers since she currently drives a Geo Metro.
Um, why do people drive slow in the #1 inner high-speed lane and ignore the slower traffic keep right signs?
kittymao
10-21-2003, 01:13 PM
because everyone has their own idea of FAST. An old woman may think 45 is right-fast enough, whereas a man in a Jag might think that 110 is more his speed.
Ya kno?
Why cn't people be courteous?
Cuilanië
10-22-2003, 05:59 AM
Great idea, SarahKate!
'Cuz there's a short circuit in their brains. The flow of information bypasses the courtesy sub-routine completely.
I don't get it. Why do people find it so difficult to pick up their dog's poop instead of leaving it in the middle of the sidewalk for other people to step on? A simple plastic bag is not much to remember, is it? (OK, bit of a rant there, but this is a major drawback to life in Paris.)
sarahkate
10-22-2003, 07:34 AM
thanks Cuilanië!
Ewww...dog poopies. I think maybe those people leaving their dog's poop laying about on the sidewalk have never stepped in a steaming pile themselves. Maybe once they know what it's like to scrape dog crap out of the cracks & crevices in the soles of their favorite shoes, they will get the idea!
I don't understand why people cut you off in traffic just to get one spot ahead of you when there is no one behind you. Aghhh!

Because people think they are 'winning' if they are 'first.'
I don't understand why my face still breaks out at the age of 29.83333. Wasn't I supposed be done with acne when adolesence ended?
siafu
10-22-2003, 08:48 AM
the answer is this: wonderful fabulous goddess women will always be in touch with their girl-in-flux, as she is powerful. the face is like, oh yeah, ok...rock on with the teenagedom. it also indicates an elastic state in the skin which translates to fewer wrinkles in the future.
why did i come in on a day off if i'm just going to nervous?
Seusomon
10-22-2003, 11:21 AM
Because it creates a bond with the rest of us who are doing exactly the same thing.
What's up with people who pick the express line at the grocery story and then launch into some kind of long drawn out ordeal with the checker about their coupons, their change, or can someone go check if there is a different flavor of something they bought, or they want to speak to the manager about the air conditioning in the store, or "what, you're out of paper bags? No, I don't want plastic! Can you go in the back and see if there are paper ones?" or "I should get the sale price that was in the paper two weeks ago, and I would have come then except my brother was in a motorcycle accident and I had to rush to the hospital, but I saved the newspaper - see!"
Christine_0701
10-22-2003, 11:30 AM
lol. i think it's because they didn't actually plan on having a lengthy drawn-out convo - maybe didn't plan on having one at all...but then they do, and drive the rest of us CRAAAAAAAZY lol
Why, oh WHY is there braille on drive up ATM's??? This one has confused me forever!!!
Seusomon
10-22-2003, 11:36 AM
What, you never saw "Scent of a Woman"? Seriously, though, I sometimes use drive-up ATMs on foot, if they are the closest ones around when I am walking. Also it may be cheaper to just make a single model ATM unit for installation in all different places.
So what is it with people who "correct" the way you spell or pronounce your name? Do they think you've lived with your name all these years and never managed to get it right?
hainlam
10-22-2003, 01:09 PM
Ooh.. that happens to me all the time, and really gripes my heiney. I have always assumed the reason is they are too involved with themselves to get to know my name and are therefore not worth my time. (kind of snarky answer huh?)
Oh, that does remind me though, some people really are that silly that they don’t know how to spell their names.. case in point, I have a friend named Tera Michelle.. and when she went to get her drivers license.. she really did think her middle name was spelled Machelle.. ?? crazy, but true.
My question: why do people leave their turning signal on long after they have made the turn?
Cuilanië
10-22-2003, 01:14 PM
That's because they don't pay enough attention to what they're doing. Scary in someone who's driving, don't you think? lol
What's with the people who never use their turning signals?
hainlam
10-22-2003, 01:17 PM
those people are even worse..
I think they are trying to get rid of someone they suspect is following them.. and they are trying to lose them.. very magnum pi.
forgot question:
what about the elderly that head out around 5pm every evening to drive slowly about town.. when they KNOW people are getting off work and would like to go home??
medeous
10-22-2003, 01:57 PM
they have to leave at 5pm to get to bingo by 6 to play the early bird game.
why do people turn the bass up sooooo loud in their cars? don't they know it makes my heart hurt?
Cuilanië
10-22-2003, 02:01 PM
That's what makes the car work! That's what those people think, anyway...
What's with pop-up ads?!!???

It's a secret plot...maybe by some monkeys, maybe not....they're secretly trying to take over the world!!! (or maybe it's pinky and brain come back)
Why do people not think it's ok to pick their noses in public...yet do it when they're driving their car???!!!!????
Sirius
10-22-2003, 09:44 PM
because people are in their own little world in their cars and beleive no one can see them
I don't get....why people can't plan ahead
nymphette
10-23-2003, 12:38 AM
people who don't plan ahead have a serious superiority complex that nothing happens until they are good and ready for it to happen, so why should they waste their time planning things???
why do people pick things out of their teeth, look at what they got and then put it back in their mouth??????????? <_< that drives me nuts!!! WHY?????
girl-who-loves-sharks
10-23-2003, 06:38 AM
Oh, that makes me feel rather gaggy at this time of day, but I suppose they do it because (1) they want to make sure the foreign matter is edible before they (2) dispose of it in the most efficient manner.
Could somebody please tell me why people think it's quite all right to flick their cigarette butts onto the sidewalk or the road, as if that weren't littering?
ssr-grl
10-23-2003, 07:50 AM
Because they can't see past the ends of their noses and they just care that the gross, smoldering, wretched piece of trash isn't in THEIR personal space. Total self-absorption.
Can someone explain why it is that I like what I do for work but I'm hate my job?
Cuilanië
10-23-2003, 07:56 AM
Is it the atmosphere? Your colleagues? The actual workplace? The people you deal with? I don't know what you do, but it sounds to me like you're doing the right job for the wrong employer...
Why do people find it so hard to say hello and smile when they walk into the office???
nymphette
10-23-2003, 08:39 AM
usually because they are unhappy with their job and just want to turn tail and head right back out... or never be there in the first place... so they dont botehr to smile and try to make the best of it!!!!

nymphette

why is it so hard for people to put their garbage in the garbage can after they eat at a fast food restaurant????

Heather and Robyn you are cracking me up on this thread!

Why do people who believe in an omnipotent God think that they should kill or oppress others so that God's will can be done?
girl-who-loves-sharks
10-23-2003, 09:02 AM
Because someone has brainwashed them into believing that God is on their side and everyone else is an infidel-- therefore, God will protect and reward them.
Why do people think it's appropriate to comment on the pregnancy of a total stranger to that pregnant stranger?
nymphette
10-23-2003, 09:03 AM
because that is the inherent problem with religion- everyone interprets g-d's word their own way, and does what they 'think' g-d says they should do!!! not what he has actually 'said'... and every religion has the holier-than-thou (pun intended) attitude that THEIRS is right....
why do people think that they should get to run a red light (or stop sign) while you have the right of way with a green light??? do they think that they are that important that the traffic rules don't apply to them???
nymphette
10-23-2003, 09:06 AM
oops, double post!!!
Why do people think it's appropriate to comment on the pregnancy of a total stranger to that pregnant stranger?
because they think that a pregnant woman is no longer a person but just an incubator which gives them t he right to say asinine things like 'you look like you are about to pop' and 'are you sure there's only ONE in there'... and to TOUCH the belly, like it is a prop or piece of furniture!!!!!!!! i have actually smacked a woman's hand away when she reached to touch my pg belly when i was at walmart in line.... maybe i was being rude, but i had had enough of that by the time iw as nine months pg!!!!!!!!!! arrrgh!!!!
why do people think that they should get to run a red light (or stop sign) while you have the right of way with a green light??? do they think that they are that important that the traffic rules don't apply to them???

Someone explain to me why a friend of mine in Britain would sign up to play outdoor sports (hockey) in the winter?
Seusomon
10-23-2003, 10:18 AM
because the weather is never decent in Britain anyway. If you're going to get cold and wet and muddy and covered in slimy grass any time you play, you might as well make the most of it.
Why is that when you get barked at, growled at, and leaped on, and slobbered on by a 100-pound dog, the owner invariably says "It's OK, he won't bite"? Oh yeah, thanks, glad to hear it...
gwensmom
10-23-2003, 10:41 AM
Because the dog never bit THEM. they are the one that feeds it!
I really don't get why I have the disco song "Funkytown" in my head
sarahkate
10-23-2003, 11:13 AM
My theory is that there a bunch of songs out there that have secretly been coded with hidden messages....telling you to sing this song in your head over & over again. I think those pesky evil monkeys are responsible for this!
*sorry--couldn't think of anything rational for this one!*
I don't get why people feel the need to speak very loudly in public places ....do they WANT us all to hear their conversations about how their thong shrunk in the dryer this morning or how their best friend's mom's aunt's neighbor's daughter had liposuction. Agh.
kittymao
10-23-2003, 11:22 AM
Ag. The whole self-absorption thing. When people are talking to others, tehy assume that only those they are talking to are listening. And it's RUDE to eaves drop, so if you're llistening, you're RUDE. It's stupid, oh GOD that,s stupid, but people believe it.
Also, YES. they DO want you to know. They get attention. I mean, if you're a girl and start talking loudly about your Thong, that's a WAY easier way to attract men's attention, ratehr than singling one out and approaching him.
oh. My boggle.

OHPossum

10-23-2003, 03:46 PM
Ah, the competitivity issue. The true cheat believes in her/his divine right to win every contest they put their energy into, while believing they will never get caught.
(I notice we have the same attitude towards large dogs, as well! lol )
And green ketchup? That's for people who don't like relish.
I don't get the idea of pop stars. Really.
[typo]
gwensmom
10-23-2003, 03:47 PM
They make it so the kids will bother the parent to buy it. Since it is a novelty they will use it faster, and now everyone has 2 bottles of ketchup instead of one. More sales, more money. When green ketchup is no longer new, they will make a new color.
Can anyone explain why my neighbor who never speaks to me just left us an invitation to her kids' Halloween party?
Oh wait- I know! It's because my mother is her daughters teacher and it would look bad if I told my mom they had a party and didn't invite us!

Why do they call horse-riding therapy for physically handicapped children "hippotherapy" when they are riding horses and not hippopotami?
Christine_0701
10-23-2003, 08:04 PM
they call it hippotherapy meaning horse therapy because hippos is greek for horse!! (American Hippotherapy Association (http://www.americanequestrian.com/hippotherapy.htm))
Why do colleges have to make the handicap-accesable paths (namely ramps) waaaay out of the way?? (seriously, on my campus, i can get to class in 10 mins going the "regular" people way, and 25 -30 mins going the "handicapped" way)
gwensmom
10-23-2003, 08:09 PM
they call it hippotherapy meaning horse therapy because hippos is greek for horse
Cool! I knew there must be a logical explanation.
Now about the handicapped ramps-
I think it is because older places had no accomodation for handicapped folks. When they went to retrofit the place, they just stuck ramps and stuff wherever it was easiest and cheapest. Gwen and I have take the "scenic route" many many times!

So what's up with those restaurants where you're supposed to order at the counter, but then a server brings the food to your table? I always think I'm in a normal restaurant, walk in and seat myself - and then nothing happens. The people who work there don't clue me in, even when they're looking right at me. Eventually my roving eyes find the scrap of paper pinned behind the register that explains how it works. But I just don't get it - if they're going to go around carrying trays of heavy plates, why not take orders at the table too; that's the easy part!

Wicca is a particular form of Paganism. So all Wiccans are Pagans, but there are many Pagans who aren't Wiccan. Also, some Wiccans prefer to use the term "Pagan" in public settings, as it's a little less alarming/provocative for many people.

hmmm.....how come doctors don't listen to your concerns? For example...i sprained my foot summer of last year (they originally thought it was broken, but nothing showed up on the x-ray....by then my foot was MEGA swollen...and it never bruised...which a sprain does, and a break doesn't), and it still hurts..quite bad sometimes...and i've talked to 3 different doctors about it multiple times, and all of them don't seem concerned in the least that it's still very painful, after over a year!!!!

too many adults are living vicariously through their children. So if somethign goes wrong in the field, teh child is an extension of the family and so therefore if the kid is a screw-up, it's projected that the parents are too.

Why do people look at you like you're weird when you eat a frozen dinner?
kittymao
11-14-2003, 01:12 AM
because people have the notion that frozen food = poor quality. carries over from the late 40's and 50's when frozen food was created. Many people STILL believe that frozen food is crap compared to real food. It's actually frozen at teh peak of freshness, undamaged in shipping compared to shipped produce ( which may get shipped in sub-zero conditions anyway!) , and otehr than freezer burn, tastes relatively similar. It was cheaper to get frozen portions than to get the real food. Technically it still is. Besides there's a level of convience that coems with frozen food, that many people interpret as laziness.
If it helps any, I wouldn't stare at you funny. Nowadays, the only way I get a full meal is if I eat out, go to someone's house or eat a frozen meal. Sad, but such is teh way of being poor and in college. I'm sure many understand.

Uhm- I think it's the paranoia of passing the cop.
Everyone I know is freaked out of their mind of passing a cop on the freeway.
So a cop goign the speed limit will therefore regulate the freeway in that fashion- and he's done his job without having to turn on his lights.
And besides- cops will pull you over for things OTHER than speeding- fix-it tickets, seatbelts ( in california) and if you're a minority- sometiems just for suspicion. My bf ( who's mexican) can get pullede over just for simply driving in a weird part of town.

Why is it that people who grow up in non-yelling households don't understand how empowering it is to YELL?!?
gwensmom
12-02-2003, 08:44 AM
Oh I can answer this! I've always lived in a non-yelling atmosphere. My mom grew up in a chaotic household with an alcoholic father, and she was determined to make our home as peaceful as she could. My dad was easygoing too and I did not have any brothers. And of course, southern girls properly raised in the 60's do not yell :P .So our upbringing was peace = good, yelling = bad.
For people like me, yelling feels like the opposite of empowering. Instead, it signifies a loss of control or a level of frustration or exhaustion so high that you cannot communicate in a sane manner. The only time I ever yell is when I feel that way and I find that state of mind unpleasant.
Does that make any sense at all?
p.s. sorry you are sick cindi :(
I don't get why people spend the holiday season whining and complaining very loudly that "We have lost the true meaning of Christmas". Gee, I didn't realize that bitching and moaning reflected what the holidays are all about! As the Whos in Whoville say, Christmas doesn't come from a store, it's in your heart. Same for Hanukkah, Ramadan and all other religious observance. Any curmudgeons out there to answer this question? ;)

I'm with you about the yelling, gwensmom.
About Christmas...I think the people who complain feel trapped in the system. They feel the pressure of expectations on them, and feel they don't have the choice to celebrate the holiday as they would prefer to see it celebrated. For a few, the complaints can be a first step toward positive change. For most, it just becomes a pointless and sad seasonal ritual.

Dalmaney
12-10-2003, 12:59 PM
Because we refuse to change our opinions at all, but remain convinced that the other person will change theirs if we can only explain our position effectively. This is valid for major things or just generally for anything that both parties are passionately right about. I had a twenty minute arguement about whether it's better to sleep with your blankets tucked in or wrapped around with about five of my friends. Tensions were high, and of course no one changed their minds. Anything where people believe at all costs that they are right will lead to a completely pointless argument, regardless of what is at stake.

I don't know...I think that sometimes there is so much going on and things just short circuit and the electricity goes off...or if we're trying to recall or do something using too many senses...maybe things have to reroute and there's a temporary freeze. I'm sure there's a scientific answer but I don't have it.

jackiethestamper2
03-15-2004, 07:24 PM
What's a pizza pop?If it's like a corn dog and your using a microwave you need to turn it 3 or 4 times during cooking. If you are using an oven it'd time for a new oven.
Why don't people use a directional signal or if they do wait til they are making the turn?
Dalmaney
03-15-2004, 07:57 PM
What is a pizza pop?! You're breaking my heart! It's a pocket of pizza fillings... "Pizza Pop" would be a trademark of Pillsbury, but it's used like "jello" to mean a dough pocket of pizza yumminess that comes frozen and is nuked to perfection.
And it's boiling and frozen at the same time because you are impatient and only cook on high.
And people don't signal because they don't have any idea where they're going, what they're doing, or how to drive. Argh!

I notice in the bible they repeat things which was translated from the Greek. My theory is that all the languages in that area are very close if not derived from latin. People wanted to make sure they were understood so they repeated themselves. In Psalms it says selah after each Psalm (which means think about this) Clear as mud????????????

Cattles are wealth, maan! Like in most of the world. If you got cows that means you got safe money.
If you got BOY cows that means people will pay you to mate your Bull with their cows. And that's good bucks.

Christine_0701
04-07-2004, 12:07 PM
well, yeah, but vernon doesn't get THAT much snow, anyways, so going by the amount of snow they normally get, it makes sense that the water levels wouldn't be fully replenished....i think they're just surprised that it's SO low....30cm (1 foot) below normal. also, if you have superly low levels in the summer, it makes sense that it's gonna be harder to replenish with snow and spring runn-off than if you didn't have such a shortage
because spring/summer/fall are all lovely seasons, and the time flies by through them, but after a month or 2 of winter, you're sick of it and want spring, and then you still have 2 months left :(

Hey!!! I'm a democrat. And my parents are dead a long time. This is someone else. I think it's just because she's a control freak.
Childless couples want to tell you how to raise your children, probably because they're jealous.
Sorry, I can't think of another question right now, so: NEXT?

No new questions for days!
Why do I keep learning new art techniques/disciplines, instead of concentrating on one, and learning it really well?

ak! what fun is that? Staying in a technique causes you to get into a rut! Besides, what makes art fun is that you make NEW things all teh time.
Why can't I sleep when I have a cold even though I'm exhausted!?

Because your sinuses are plugged, and you can't breathe when you lie down?
Why can't I make myself go to bed early?

Because if you go to sleep you might miss something!

:D My mom used to say that I wanted to stay up late when I was a kid because I was afraid I might miss something! So that must be it.
As for being unmotivated, maybe it's because:
A. You have a lot on your plate already.
B. Everyone deserves a day off just to "veg", and let "the little gray cells" rest.
C. You need time off to let inspiration come.
Why am I so tired after a two-week "vacation"?

maybe you were outside doing a lot of things and you used a lot of energy
or maybe the thought of work is just making you feel tired..
how/why are people so stubborn

Probably because it's human nature?
Why do people like to set off firecrackers, which don't even look pretty, but just make a loud noise?

because they think it's pretty? or they think it makes them look cool?
