View Full Version : What glue do you all use to collage?

Hey everyone. I'm loving the collage style and such, and I was wondering what you all use for glue. I used to use watered down elmers glue and apply it with a brush. It was a little hard though because it would make the magazine clippings curl up, along with the whole collage. So then I got into using glue sticks, which seems to be working fine for me and I like it more then watered down elmers glue. What does everyone else use? Anyone recomend a certain brand of glue sticks?

I use Aleene's tacky glue for the heavy duty stuff that doesn't want to stick. Pritt stick gluesticks for light papers but I'm looking for something that sticks better.

I use gel acrylic Medium like modpodge but it won't get wonky if you mix it with acrylic paint.

I personally can't stand glue sticks. they end up not getting close nough to the edge, and when you do, it mushes out.. and I don't think the stuff ever dries (except when you leave the cap off the tube.) :-)

I get really messy usually when I collage so I have a lot of ugly magazine ads handy to cover my desk in.......therefore my glue stick usually gets to the edges pretty well. I use glue stick for smaller jobs like ATCs usually, but I use modge podge for things like decopaging boxes. Also, there is some really cheap paint brand at Michael's that sells a very inexpensive and GREAT quick drying acrylic sealant that I'll use so the modge podge doesn't forever stay tacky (the tackiness seems to never go away on the outside).

Today though I just ran out of modge podge mid-project and decided it was a good opportunity to go down to the brand spankin new art store just a few blocks from my apartment. Much nicer to walk there than the 30 minute drive to and from Michael's. They didn't carry modge podge but they DID carry this glue that I've never seen before called "yes paste". The guy said that it was used for the same jobs that you would use modge podge for AND it's acid free so you can use it for scrapbooking. I'll keep you in the know on how it works out for me.

Oh and glue stick definitely dries.....;) It's a pretty handy little item, you can use it to attach pasties....you'll know how dry it gets and how well it glues when you try to pull them off. ;)

Depends on what I am working on. Mod Podge is great, an inexpensive - but sometimes the paper will curl a little bit before drying. I really like Sobo Premium Craft and Fabric Glue. It is made by Delta Technical Coatings, Inc. You can get it at Wal-Mart. It is for porous and semi-pouous surfaces and dries clear - does not yellow. This stuff is great if you are working with fabric or feathers, it dries flexible. Not for clothes or anything you plan on tossing in the washer though. This stuff does not curl paper. I love it.

A note on the acrylic sprays for elimanating the tackiness - I noticed that the same thing I spend a couple of bucks on at Wal-Mart is $4.98 a can at the craft store. And at Wal-Mart, if you buy it over in the craft section it is $4.98. But if you stroll across the store to the paint section you can get it for $2.98 or less.

I use rubber cement! I like it because it's easy to brush on, sticks really well, and when it dries you can just rub all the excess off.:) If I'm out of rubber cement (you really do go through it quickly) I will use Yes! paste or I also have a glue pen that I like, with the spongy tip.

I love Yes Paste but I have to order it from Daniel Smith....my local art supply store doesn't carry it. It does not curl the clips from magazines and can be diluted some with water. I also am having great luck with Nori glue, again from Daniel Smith and archival. For large collages or when collaging a painting on canvas, I use Golden Matt Medium. It acts as a glue and a sealer. I also use the Matt Medium over pieces glued down with other products. I have used Paper Perfect adhesive put out by Art Quest I believe but it is expensive. It is good however with magazine clippings as it doesn't wrinkle the pages so much. Hope this is helpful. Happy gluing.
For the wrinkly pages I have tried using an old credit card as a brayer over the glued down piece to make sure there is no air bubbles under it. It seems to help with the wrinkling problem.
Good luck! [gypsycrone]

Lately I've been using something I found totally by accident. The store I was in bought all the inventory from an office supply that closed down. I bought some stamps and the lady threw the glue in for free. It's a ZIG two way glue pen. It's acid free, Xylene free, and it has a chisel tip so I can get my edges really well. So far it hasn't made anything curl up. It can be used as a permanent bond or a temporary bond. It works with stamps, embossing, glitter, stencils, photos, collages and masking. It goes on light blue so you can see if you missed any spots and it dries crystal clear. So far I love it.

I also use a lot of rubber cement.

I just started using Yes! Paste last night.....how do you get things to lay very flat while using it? I got SOOOO frustrated doing a collage last night because things just wouldn't STICK! I think it's because it wasn't setting very fast? How do the Yes! Paste users use it?

Yes Zig is the brand name. They make some good pens with super fine tips too. :)

Oo. the silver Zigs. Yum. I like the Sakura Microns, but that's becuase I'm a dork. or something.
I used glue sticks and elmers for like, two seconds. The curling made me mad ( like crazy-mad). So I went with the 3M high-strength tube of epoxt dealey. It doesn't curl and holds like a dream (especially for photos), but it has fat fumes and is near 4 dollars for a 2 oz tube. So I went to the Rubber Cement. and I love it. I do, I do.

Mod Podge is wonderful stuff. If you'd like some we could arrange some sort of trade. The extra postage is no problem for me. :)

I use Yes paste for almost everything, it's so great. i usually dilute with a little bit of water so it's easier to spread with a brush. i use a pretty generous amount of glue...it doesn't set too fast, so you have time to reposition your work and smooth it out before the wrinkles set in. and cleanup is easy too.

I just discovered PVA glue (for bookbinding). Sticks like a dream, is water soluble, and has no odor. I think it's similar in expense to mod podge. I love the Zig pens, but find that they don't work with glossy paper. I also like double sided tape for some collages, especially if it's just on paper (rather than on a box or something that will get a lot of wear and tear).
