I have the hiccups. Which made me wonder... what cures does everyone espouse?

I'm a big fan of drinking out of a glass backwards (ie. bending over and drinking out of the opposite side of the glass).

Some of my favourites:

Dissolving a spoonful of sugar in your mouth slowly.

The "scare". BOO!

Probably not the most effective hiccup cure out there but it's fun.

Drink a little bit of lemon juice ... I learned this from the science fair in third grade and it is the only thing that has ever worked, absolutely every time.

A more fun one is one my friend Trent taught me where you drink four sips of water and you turn the glass before each sip and say "frog." It doesn't work all the time but it's really silly!

Walk into a bar. Ask for A lemon with "Bitters" (Angostura bitters) on it. bite into it for a minute or two. Voila. no more hiccups. tip well, or start drinking. :-)

I've heard that the reason you hiccup is because your asophagus (sp?) is seizing up. So...what my mom always told me to do is sip a glass of water continuosly in small sips...works like a charm. Also, to make it work faster, drink warm sugar water (warm, because it soothes the muscles, sugar because it makes it taste better than just plain warm water ;))

take at least ten sips of water, don't gulp fast do it relaxed and deliberate, while you hold your breath. this works without fail every time i have ever had hiccups, and has worked on every one i have suggested it to...........unless you are drunk, those hiccups are a little tuffer, then you'll have to do it about three times.

I'm with avataurus6. 10 slow sips of water while holding your breath works every time.

This almost always works for me, and it's easy to do it without calling attention to yourself!:

Take one long deep breath and fill your lungs as much as you think is possible. Then, take in two more quick breaths in a row (you'll be able to do it, even though you think you already filled your lungs). Then hold your breath. That's it!

I learned this cure from my grandmother, and it works every time:

Get a drinking glass and fill with water.
Place a clean tissue (like Kleenex -- but don't use anything that has lotion in it!) over the glass, so it kinda looks like a drum.
Drink the water through the Kleenex.
Voila! No more hiccups.

My friends always disbelieve me when I explain the procedure, but are then amazed when it works.

I've got one. Put a dab of mustard on your tongue. I think it's the shock of the taste, but it always works for me.

A spoonful of peanut butter always works for me. Effective and yummy.

This one was told to me by an ex-choir member, who was taught it in choir class. A hiccup is your diaphram muscle spasming. So take the deepest breath you can, and hold it. Simultaneously, press your hands on the muscle from the outside. The idea is to flatten out the muscle (from the outside with your hands, and from the inside with your lungs) for about 10 to 20 seconds, which should stop it from spasming.

This worked *every time* for me, until I gained 30 pounds. Now it doesn't work as much as it used to- I guess I have too much padding between my diaphram and my hands now! :(

Hold your breath, work up a good sized mouthful of spit, and swallow twice. I can't remember where I got it from but it works for me every time. :)

meika, my BF does that. Except insetad of swallowing, he spits it out.

as for me- *big smirk*I take a big chestful of air with the intention of burping( you'll know you hit it when your chest begins to rumble a bit), and then Burp. It will release a vair amount of pressure. Do that about 3 times, and your hiccups will be gone.
Of course, I was always told that the Hiccups came because of an excess of air in your passages, so Burping effectively releases that air.

I do little breaths, kinda like lamaze breaths (even though I've never been pregnant). It started because I used to freak out when I had hiccups, thinking I was suffocating or something... LOL.

i have a cure that has ALWAYS worked for me, but you can't do it to yourself... whenever a friend says to me 'god, i have hiccups and i can't get rid of them!!!' (or something to that effect) i say 'well, if you would pay me back that FIFTY BUCKS you owe me, they night go away!!!' :) makes them shock, thinking they owe me money, when from, where, why and then they realize they don't... then they always say 'i dont' owe you fifty bucks'.... and then i say 'are your hiccups gone???' then they stop for a minute.. they are always gone... works like a charm!!!

This sounds really dumb and looks stupid, but it's quick and always helps. All you need is a glass of water and a pen or your finger. If you don't have a pen then your finger will work as a substatute, I mean. Stick the pen under your tongue and drink as much of the water as you can without taking a breath. Thats it. Works every time.

I breathe deeply and slowly. really deeply. It's all diaphram control!

For me, either melting sugar on the back of the tongue or being hugged.

And now for the funny story - my DH came home from work with hiccups really bad. Mom, my Aunt and I were sitting at the dining room table working on a project. I said, "Sweetheart, before I forget - I had a call from the bank today. There is some sort of problem with our house insurance. They know that they have misapplied the insurance payments, but have not tracked it down yet. So in the meantime we have no house insurance and they need us to bring our payments up to date until they can straighten it out and they will reimburse us at that time. It's $2,500.00 which we have in savings."

I will not tell you what he said, but when he paused I interrupted and asked "Do you still have hiccups?" I think the only thing that saved my life was that there were two witnesses - but his hiccups were cured............heheheheh

i have a friend who would just yell "betcha can't hiccup right now..." over and over at me. It's the only thing that worked for me.

If the water or sugar or holding your breath while swallowing doesn't work, try applying a cold spoon or knife to the back of the neck. I actually just massage the back of the neck.

It has worked at times. All of the above have.

I remember once as a kid I had horrible, loud, jerking hiccups that I couldn't get rid of. They actually hurt! Finally my dad, very gruffly, "Just stop that right now!!" I was startled. A second later he started laughing. He'd scared the hiccups right out of me.

aack! I hate hiccups, and I get often get them every day. My cures are always changing, cuz sometimes the old cures don't work. This is what I've tried:

peanut butter
holding breath while swallowing 3 times
drinking 10 small sips of water really quickly
visualizing poking my diaphragm with a tiny needle & filling the hole in (yes it's strange, but it actually worked a few times)
someone scaring me (a friend did that a long time ago- it worked :D)
