I've been making a lot of cd mixes for the past, i guess 5 years or so.
And I want to try to make ones full of songs others find happy and others find sad.
So, if you could, write down songs that make you happy and songs that make you sad, feel free to tell me reasons :)
And if you would like a copy of the cds, PM me

The best song for this post has got to be:
Morcheeba - Fear and Love
First it makes you sad because of the melody and the tone of what's being said, but if you have love it makes you happy because you know how much it can help you overcome life's trials.
But if you don't want a song that plays on all of your emotions and just want to be happy listen to:
BIF - Tango Shoes
It makes any girl who's ever been crapped on feel empowered.

Hm..a happy song comes straight to mind, but sad songs might take a while to sift through because I've got a lot of them...
Acda en de Munnik - "Het regent zonnestralen" ("It's raining sunbeams")
It's a Dutch song, it's about a man who's really depressed but suddenly a twist of fate gives him another chance in life. The song's so upbeat it gets me out of bed every morning :)

Peace Piece by Bill Evans is still one of the most quietly sad songs I've heard.

Happy Songs:
Playboy Playgirl by Pizzicato Five (a very catchy, poppy Japanese song)
If I Had $1000000 by BNL (It's charming and folky, with a few funny parts... if you can get the live version from their album Rock Spectacle, there are more funnies :P)
Sad Songs:
The Scientist by Coldplay (It doesn't speak to me as much as it does other people, but I like the melody)

Sad:
Luv by Travis
Sour Times by Portishead (not really sad but kinda low-key and moody)

The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot
Empty Chairs at Empty Tables from Les Miserables

Off the top of my head,
happy:
- Can't Help Falling in Love - as covered by Lick the Tins (the theme song of the movie The Snapper). Just thinking about it, I had to line it up on the ol' Winamp. Of course, this makes it a little hard to think of other songs.
- A New England - Billy Bragg
- Every Day - Buddy Holly
- Beethoven's Ninth Symphony...
sad:
- Gone to America - Steeleye Span
- My Love - Steeleye Span (both on their best album, Sails of Silver)
- Simon and Garfunkle (not quite everything, but a lot)
- The Queen and the Soldier - Suzanne Vega
happy or sad depending on current attached/single status
- Only You - Yaz (known as Yazoo in their native Britain)

:D Anything super-hella upbeat. I love love No Doubt. (Tragic Kingdom) Maybe Spiderwebs or Just a Girl
:( The Baby (or something like that) by Blake Shelton. Sad. Sad. Sad. And Concrete Angel by Martina Mcbride.
Ummm... I don't know. I don't know what you listen to, and I listen to alot of different stuff, but I honestly don't know, because most songs seem to get different emotions out of me at different times...

Oh, James, PLEASE turn off the new Liz Phair album and go listen to her old stuff! I like a few of the things on her new album, but I just can't share your affections for HWC. Maybe it's a guy/gal thing...
:) songs: Feelin' groovy by Simon & Garfunkel, Good Day Sunshine by the Beatles. These songs remind me of my childhood.
:( songs: Don't Fade on Me by Tom Petty (remind me of a relationship that faded against my wishes), and Northeaster by James McMurtry (a man reflects on the state of his life, insisting, "I'm all alone, it's alright, isn't gonna wound my pride, if anyone can claim they're alright... so can I"). And almost everything off the Cowboy Junkies' Lay It Down.

Okay, now that my brain is working again.
A truly sad song is "The Rainbow Connection" by Willie Nelson...or by Kermit :) .
Also:
"Bird Stealing Bread" by Iron and Wine
"Minneapolis" by Lucinda Williams
I do know that I am often moved to tears every time I hear California Stars by Billy Bragg, but it is not a sad song per se.
"Fake Plastic Trees" by Radiohead
"Kansas City" by Okkervil River
Sad songs are my favorite...
Most ska songs are happy.

Interesting... I think that's a really inspiring song! It doesn't make me sad at all. In fact, Chris and I plan to use it as our wedding song, when the time comes.
