View Full Version : Knitting Travelling LMAO - FULL!

Kelly

Here's something I haven't quite seen done before, I'd like to see if there's enough interest in it to do a few installments.

I wanted to see if I could do something communal to go along with this project (http://knit.populuxe.ca/?page_id=10) that I currently have going.

If I have enough people interested in this LMAO and others down the line, I would love to make this an ongoing thing with each installment getting stitched to another.

This is an LMAO for knitting. No crochet, embroidery, just knitting.

It will travel from me, around the circle, back home again.

What you do:
1. The first person in line will get a small knitted object from me.
2. There will be one live stitch where the rest will be bound off. The next person in line then takes that live stitch, and adds onto it. You can either cast on more stitches from that one stitch, or pick up stitches through the side of the knitted object I've sent you.
3. When you're done, you bind off all your stitches except for one, leaving a live stitch. The next person in line repeats.
4. I will include little tags for people to safety pin onto their section. This way we'll know who made what!

When the item gets to the last person in line, they send it back to me.

The key is to never bind off all your stitches, keep one stitch live so the item never really "ends".

How long: Each person keeps the item for one week. After that week is up, you bind off and send to the next person. No ifs ands or buts. Even if you only knit one row.

Do I need to be a fabulous knitter?
No. As long as you can knit a stitch, cast on, and bind off, you can participate. No special requirements needed. However, if you are a more accomplished knitter, please feel free to add any lace, cabling, or different stitches. Experiement, and do whatever you want! Use whatever yarn you want! This will be a great way to get rid of left over yarn in your stash if you want.

This is international. Because of that, please don't knit an entire afghan so the package won't be ridiculously heavy and expensive to send. However, there aren't hard and fast maximum sizes, just be thoughtful about the postage.

Questions? Who's interested?

If you're interested, post a message here and PM me with your address. I'm limiting this to five six signups.

1. Kelly (me!)
2. Whimsey
3. Akua
4. Gwensmom
5. mcdc33
6. Cuilanie
7. MWQuilt

MWQuilt asked a few good questions so I want to post my answers here.

Are there any restrictions on yarn?
Nope - definitely not. Can be luxury cashmere or cheap acrylic. No restrictions on colours either.

Can I knit in charms or beads?
Certainly! If you know how to knit these items into the cloth, please feel free to! But they must be knit in, not sewn in afterwards.

ETA - I added a slot for mcdc33!

This piece is home! Thank you all so much for participating!

I mentioned a stitcholder.... since no one else
responded to that I guess the one I made will go to Kelly, though
it might have been nice to trade them along the way....

OK...I have seen the knitting! or at least the first part of it on Kelly's blog..very interesting construction and I am looking forward to seeing what everyone else decides to add on.

I am also looking forward to working out what my own bit should be like, but also a teensy bit scared about deciding what to do. I am hoping that when the warm fuzzy (spikey? lumpy? sparkly?) knitting eventually reaches me, I shall intuitively know what it needs to have added to it .

What fun!

Akua
11-14-2007, 10:40 AM
I am brand spanking new to knitting...and am self taught.

So Lithodora, the wonderful part of the internet is that you can learn for free online.

I am a recovering fiberholic.... I own several looms which I'm not using
( story for another time), I yearn to learn to spin and was gifted a Turkish? drop spindle that i still can't get to go, but my metier is crochet. And I dig freeform.

I share this by way of saying that the trick for me was to get short needles. I ordered some 6" wood 10.5 knitting neeedles on eBay and it was so manageable! I just bought another pair that were in a psuedo kit--- ( that is in a plastic package with a junky, porrly produced, set of learn-to-knit instructions) but they were also very short and size 8.

I have a defacto set of 6" long Number 3s that I was using daily until i lost one.... they were loooong plastic needles and after one broke, i broke the other one. The lack of a stopper on the end wasn't a problem.....

Cuilanië

Hey Akua, you might want to try circular needles. They come in all sizes, you can manage wider projects with them because of the linking cord, and the rigid part tends to be about 6 inches long... I'm on my way to converted! :)

Akua
11-22-2007, 01:17 PM
Circular needles seem more of what makes knitting hard to this crocheter--- all that stuff in the way.

I am, however, delighted, excited to be on my way with a wonderful project....http://brookenelson.com/leafscarfpattern.html
very very
exciting to me as a new and novice knitter....Brooke's Column of Leaves Scarf.
It is incredibly meditative because, unlike anything else I do, I can't do anything else while I'm doing it, LOL! well other than listen to music----

Joy in the making,
Akua

Cuilanië
11-22-2007, 02:34 PM
Yeah, that cord is a bit difficult to manage at first, and the nylon ones do tend to kink up in annoying and distracting ways. One gets used to it, though, and a large project will weight it down and make it behave, as I found when I knit myself a woolen lace shawl. If the length of the rigid needles is a problem (as I have found whenever I try to knit when sitting in a chair with armrests, or on a bus, or even simply when I have a project with a lot of width), it's the best of both worlds. I just love the maneuverability of the short needle combined with the width flexibility the cord gives. :)

That scarf looks gorgeous. ^_^ I <3 knitting lace! I find it's less of a challenge than cables (no fussing about with the holding needle) and it looks wonderful.

Hello everyone! Just wanted to let you know that the knitting has arrived today from Gwensmom, safe and sound. I will begin working on it tomorrow and hopefully it will go out by the weekend! I love the way it looks. I am so surprised at the yarn and it is not what I was expecting at all. I thought it would be heavier... but this is great! I have the PERFECT yarn for this "Fine" project. Hugs all! Can you tell I am excited???? WOOT! ~Maralena

Cuilanië - The package is going out to you today, via PRIORITY MAIL. How's that for quick service? LOL

I kept my last row on number "0"'s... because I wouldn't wish "Picking up" my yarn selection on anybody. Its a mix of thread and nobs. The needles are old extras and can just go along with the project and discarded at the end... just in case someone doesn't have small needles.

This was fun!

I sure will be Connie!

If you want to learn to knit there are tons of books out there right now, and there's a fabulous online knitting resource to:
http://knittinghelp.com

They have free videos of everything you need to learn to knit.

A great book for a beginner as well as "Stitch 'N Bitch" by Debbie Stoller. Make sure you get the first one, not the second, the second kind of picks up where the first left off, but they're both great to have for learners!

This piece of knitting is lovely, but it's a little different than I was expecting...kind of more delicate.

So all my pre-conceived ideas went out the window when I saw it and I have been racking my brains to try and decide what to do with it. I think I know now...I sorted out a pattern and then went to shop for yarns today. Got two colourways of the same yarn because I couldn't decide which one will look best.

I am hoping to be done within the next couple of days..Kelly, I will keep you informed. The thing with going last is that I feel a terrific sense of responsibility to do something that enhances and fits in well with all the lovely work that has already been done.

It's home, it's home, it's home!

You guys all did so FABULOUSLY, it looks absolutely beautiful. What amazes me most, is that this piece looks like it was all knit by one person because it all flows together so perfectly.

This will definitely be making the rounds again - but that will be announced in a little bit :).

Pictures will be coming soon, my camera battery is just charging up (I had a big work-related photoshoot this morning!).

So sorry to keep you guys all waiting in agony!

I had a reshoot yesterday that took me a bit longer than expected.

But here it is!! All done!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2014/2214151681_01270ffa64.jpg

There's a few more pictures here:
http://knit.populuxe.ca/?page_id=48

It's also up on Ravelry.com for anybody who is on there as well. PM me if you want more info on that.

Now, I'd like to hear what you guys think.

I'm absolutely in love with this piece. In fact, you could say overjoyed. You guys all did an absolutely fabulous job!

MWQuilt left one stitch live to make it so this one can be added onto in the future. That was the original idea, that way it could be sent back out and have even more people add onto it!

However, I've been thinking.

1. It looks wonderful the way it is. I wouldn't change a thing. But more additions could make it look even more wonderful!

2. I would like to get a large enough collection of single pieces like these so they could be shown in a gallery. Therefore, starting brand new again and shipping out that piece, rather than adding onto this one.

What do you guys think? What's the best way to go?

Akua

That really is a fabulous project. I'm so glad that everyone kept this one going. Wouldn't it be great to end up with enough to make a blanket, well maybe a lap blanket or something.

I think that if it were me, I'd be tempted to start out with a new piece. It would keep the mailing cost down, (which I'm all about!) and you'd be able to keep the completed piece safe and sound at home.

I second someone else's comment about shipping and having...

.keeping this piece, means you have this piece

. starting a new is more freeing... ( less intimidation from seeing all the other work <g>

Wonderful idea, Kelly!

I had a brief idea of a round-robin, but that's... fraught, maybe. I'd be willing to start one, send it round, and then send it to Kelly for display/working into an afghan/whatever... ^_^

Beautiful work everyone! :thewave:

Oh, just one or two things: I think some of the tags got mixed up before the piece reached me, because the order the parts are knitted in didn't seem to match the flight list order. Also, I think Wendy's tag was missing. I kept forgetting to mention that, so now I have...
